In Part III of this blog series, we discussed preparing your reporting infrastructure by migrating to Oracle Analytics Publisher.
Another important readiness milestone is ensuring that your application tier runs on Oracle Linux 8 (OL8) or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 (RHEL 8).
Why OL8 or RHEL 8 is Required
Your Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2 application tier must run on OL8 or RHEL 8 prior to updating to the Next Generation Technology Stack.

OL8 or RHEL 8 provide the certified operating system foundation required for the newer application technology stack components included in the Next Generation Technology Stack.
Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2 has been certified on OL8 and RHEL 8 since June 2021. This certification enables you to complete the operating system transition while continuing to run on the Classic Technology Stack.
Plan Your Operating System Transition
Begin by reviewing the operating system currently used by each application tier node and determining the work required to migrate or upgrade these nodes.
Depending on your current platform and infrastructure strategy, this transition may involve:
- An in-place OS upgrade from Oracle Linux 7 (OL7) to OL8.
- A migration from an existing Linux system to a newly provisioned OL8 or RHEL 8 system.
- A cross-platform migration from a non-Linux application tier platform to OL8 or RHEL 8.
As part of your planning:
- Review the Oracle E-Business Suite installation documentation for your target operating system.
- Verify that your EBS release, application tier architecture, hardware and target operating system meet all prerequisites.
- Review your existing operating system configuration, packages, mount points, scripts, and customizations.
- Identify third-party products, integrations, tools and platform-specific custom code that may be affected.
- Review automation scripts, monitoring tools, backup utilities, and operational procedures that may depend on the current operating system.
- Develop a testing and fallback strategy for validating the EBS application tier after the transition.
Because OL8 and RHEL 8 have already been certified for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2, you can complete this work today rather than waiting for the Next Generation Technology Stack release. Completing this milestone independently reduces the amount of change introduced during the future technology stack update.
Key Takeaways
- Don’t wait for the Next Generation Technology Stack release before upgrading or migrating your application tier to OL8 or RHEL 8.
- OL8 and RHEL 8 have been certified for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2 since 2021, allowing you to complete this prerequisite today.
- Completing this operating system transition now reduces the scope of the future Next Generation Technology Stack update and allows you to address operating system changes on your own schedule.
