Oracle periodically certifies newer releases of application technology stack components to provide improved security, supportability, and access to new features. In a previous blog post, we introduced the roadmap for updating Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) Release 12.2 to the Next Generation Technology Stack.
This is the fourth article in a series of blog articles to review and introduce new terminology and concepts for updating the Oracle E-Business Suite 12.2 Application Technology Stack to the Next Generation Technology Stack.
What does it Mean to Update to the Next Gen Tech Stack for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2?
Historically, getting to later certified releases of the Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) Application Technology Stack required an upgrade of EBS. For example, to get to the application technology stack based upon Fusion Middleware 11g and Java Development Kit 7, you upgraded from EBS Release 12.1 or 11i to EBS Release 12.2 and this included the installation of later releases of the technology stack components.
The Continuous Innovation release model for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2 delivers ongoing 12.2.X updates to applications code and underlying technologies without requiring a major upgrade. The Next Gen Tech Stack update aligns with this model and is a revolutionary approach to getting to the latest certified releases of the application tier technology stack components without requiring a major upgrade to EBS.
In this new method of updating to the Next Gen Tech Stack, you will update the Classic Tech Stack to the latest certified technology components using EBS Release 12.2 Online Patching. The update from the Classic Tech Stack to the Next Gen Tech Stack will happen while your users are online and actively using the application. Similar to a regular online patching cycle, once the update is complete you will plan for the required downtime to cut over to the updated technology stack.
