Title page of EBS 12.1.3 vs. 12.2 whitepaperAre you wondering whether to plan your next upgrade to E-Business Suite 12.1.3 or 12.2?  This guidance should help:

This short white paper lists the major criteria:

When Should You Choose 12.1?

Consider targeting 12.1 if any of the following circumstances applies to your organization:

  • You prefer to target a release on which Oracle has thousands of live customers.
  • You would like to stay on 12.1 for 3-5 years before upgrading to 12.2.
  • You need to move from a release below 11.5.10 with no direct upgrade to 12.2.

When Should You Choose 12.2?

Consider targeting 12.2 if any of the following circumstances applies to your organization:

  • You need the high availability provided by Online Patching.
  • You want the functional enhancements that are in 12.2.
  • You prefer to invest in a single project to upgrade directly to 12.2.

It discusses those considerations in detail and provides links to other resources that you might use to weigh the pros and cons of each release.

We are at 12.0.6 and are going to 12.1.3 in the new year. As part of the upgrade we are also looking at our SSO version

Can you indicate what are best options would be here (given that we will be doing a full regression test of the application as part of the EBS upgrade)?

Also what are the licence implications of going to OAM (if we choose to do so). Do our grants for OAS move over with this migration?

    Hi Jason,

For SSO integration options, please see (Overview of Single Sign-On Integration Options for Oracle E-Business Suite (Doc ID 1388152.1)).

We'd recommend contacting your Oracle account manager for more information about licenses.

    Hi, Jason,

And to add to Hussein's comment:

Premier Support for Oracle Single Sign-On 10g ended in December 2012. All Oracle Single Sign-On users should plan on migrating to Oracle Access Manager at their earliest convenience.

    Hi Steven,

I think I saw that R12.2 comes by default with 11gR2, but that database version is ending the premier support on January 2015.

Is not better to wait and do an upgrade from 11i/11gR2 to 12.2/12c?

Also where can I find details on the functionality differences between R12.1 and R12.2 for specific modules like GL, AP, PO, FA?

    Hi, Carlos,

We haven't released our certification for EBS 12.2 with either Database or yet. That certification is underway now. EBS 12.2 users should continue to use the release until those certifications are completed.

Oracle's Revenue Recognition rules prohibit us from discussing certification and release dates, but you're welcome to monitor or subscribe to this blog. I'll post updates here as soon as soon as they're available.

You can find details about the new 12.2 features in the Release Content Document linked from this article:

Could you Please any one suggest and provide the Note Ids to review for upgrade of the E-business suite from 12.1.3 to 12.2.X as our current environment is running on Aix.6.1 we are planning to upgrade to 12..2.x. Please provide us the recommended note Id's to follow the steps.

OS requirements are provided in Oracle E-Business Suite Installation and Upgrade Notes Release 12 (12.2) for IBM AIX on Power Systems (64-bit)(Doc ID 1330703.1).

Overall, a very good resource is Scenarios for Getting Started With Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2" (Doc ID 1587195.1). Review the flow diagram in Scenario 2: Upgrading from a Pre-12.2.0 Release to Release 12.2.4. It provides a high level flow and identifies the documentation you will need.

Also, here is a pointer to the EBS 12.2 Documentation web library:

    Hello Steven

In 2018 would you revisit why you should upgrade to 12.2 instead of 12.1 from any EBS version?

What are the logical and business advantages of going 12.2?

  • Steven Chan Friday, August 3, 2018
    Hello, Howard,

EBS 12.2 has significantly-enhanced functionality compared to EBS 12.1. For a complete list of new functionality in EBS 12.2, see the Release Content Document linked from this article:

If you'd like a high level overview and demonstration of EBS 12.2, I'd recommend getting in touch with your Oracle account manager.

Best of luck with your upgrade!
