A handy new Note documents the process of migrating an Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 environment from a Linux 32-bit operating system to a Linux 64-bit operating system. The migration process incorporates portions of existing processes and references steps in existing documentation. For details, see:
- Migrating Oracle E-Business Suite R12 from Linux 32-bit to Linux 64-bit (Metalink Note 471566.1)

Hi Steven,
We are currently planning a 11.5.9CU2 / 9iR2 upgrade to Release 12.
Current 11.5.9CU2 is running on 32-bit RHEL4 Linux (current server A)
Our target is to have R12/10gR2 or 11g on 64-bit Linux on a new server (target server B).
We have absolutely no room/capacity on current server A to upgrade in place, then migrate to the new 64-bit Linux server B.
We know that 11i is not supported on 64-bit linux OS and that R12 is supported on either 32-bit or 64-bit linus OS.
Question: is it possible technically to:
(a) Install 64-bit linux os on server B
(b) Clone current 11.5.9CU2 environment from server A to server B
(c) Upgrade to R12 on server B.
--> have a R12 running on Linux 64-bit
... or we absolutely need intermediate steps like upgrading to R12 on a 32-bit linux then migrate from R12 32-bit to R12 64-bit?
Regards
Simon

Hi, Simon,
Having not tried this particular approach myself, I can't give you a recommendation with any degree of authority. I'll ask one of our experts from our Applications Platforms Group to comment on this.

Steven

Perhaps an off topic... How well is R12 supported on RHEL64? I know it's certified for RHEL64, but it is also certified on Itanium/Windows in split configuration. And I know from personal experience that split configuration, especially with DB on Itanium is bad. We plan to move to Linux but we have doubts about RHEL64.
Perhaps RHEL32 is a better, more stable choice?
Thank you!

Kirill-
Actually, you'll be pleased to hear that the applications code itself delivered on 32-bit Linux and on 64-bit Linux is identical, so there is no quality or support difference; in fact, rigorous technology and functional integration testing is done on both OS flavors. And, you can run the database on 64-bit Linux, thereby gaining scalability. We do not consider Linux x64 a "split config" -- it is a primary Release 12 platform. Unfortunately, we do not offer the same support for Itanium.
