E-Business Suite 12.1.1 Templates for Oracle VM Now Available

[Editor: This the the first of a five-part series from Ivo Dujmovic, an architect in our Applications Technology Integration group, on virtualization and cloud topics]

As you may have noticed, we have not yet done the recap of my OOW'09 E-Business Suite Virtualization Update presentation. The reason was twofold: we wanted to create a blog mini-series, for which this is the first article, and we wanted to publish that after we finished some development work. So without any further ado...

We are pleased to announce that Oracle VM templates for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1.1 are now available for download from Oracle E-Delivery.  Both 32-bit and 64-bit versions are available.  This virtual deployment package delivers a "quick start" for E-Business Suite 12.1.1 on Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.3.

Oracle VM template for Oracle E-business Suite 12.1.1 (64-bit and 32-bit) consists of two separate virtual machines:
    • Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1.1 Vision Demo Database Tier
    • Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1.1 Application Tier
The database tier virtual machine includes:
    • Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.3
    • Oracle Database
    • E-Business Suite Release 12.1.1 Vision demo database with data
The applications tier virtual machine includes:
    • Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.3
    • Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1.1 applications node
Not for Production Environments

These templates are designed for demonstration environments and other non-production purposes; they are not intended to be used for production environments.

This is a very good option to quickly check the features of a new version without doing a install. Thank you very much for that.

Am I too early to check or everyone else having issue in accessing the VM Templates through edelivery.oracle.com? I cannot find the Oracle VM Templates as a Product Option.

Hi Rama!

Thanks for your encouraging comments.
The OVM Templates is an option on e-delivery, and has been there for a while -- we are not the first template delivered. Please follow carefully the instructions:

Visit http://edelivery.oracle.com/oraclevm
Complete your registration information (Name, Company Name, Email Address and Country) and click on the download agreement
Select "Oracle VM Templates" from the "Select a Product Pack" pull-down menu
Select "x86 64 bit" or "x86 32 bit" from the "Platform" pull-down menu
Click "Go" and then select Oracle E-Business Suite from the list of Oracle VM Templates Download and unzip the files and read the readme

Hope this helps,

Hi, Ivo, thanks a lot for these templates, I've been looking forward to them.

Downloading now, so ready to test in a day or two.

(I wish I could subscribe to a service to get every new available Oracle VM template automatically pushed to my servers, instead of having to initiate download, though..)

Best regards,

I received the following question from a customer via Support:

[Begining of Question]

Customer found the Vision Pack (http://edelivery.oracle.com/EPD/Download/get_form?egroup_aru_number=12027849), but that states it is only for demo purposes and they would like a production version for EBS. Do we have one or can one be created?

[End of Question]

Since this is not the first time this question was asked, I will post my clarification here as well.

The template only provides the results of the E-Business Suite 12.1.1 Rapid Install with Vision Demo database.

The disclaimer is there solely to explain that the virtual world's magic is limited to installation-level deployment. Just as with the Rapid Install, the upgrade, implementation, and sizing work is still left for the customer to do based on their needs.

Once those tasks are performed, the resulting template can be used for production deployment of E-Business Suite.

Hi Ivo,

I'm interested in installing E-Business suite for testing purposes and the VM that you mentioned sounds like the right solution for me.
but for greater flexibility and reduced costs I would like to install this VM in a cloud base environment, for example Amazon EC2.

Do you have any Amazon VM image ready?
or any other solution that will fit my case?

Thanks in advance,

Hi Shai,
We do not have a solution for that right now, but if you are attending OpenWorld, you might be interested in session
