This article describes the different types of Oracle E-Business Suite virtual machine software packages available, and how they are appropriate for different situations.
The appliances, templates, and assemblies provided on the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud (https://edelivery.oracle.com/linux) all contain virtual machine images. These are intended for different purposes, but all allow you to install EBS rapidly and create an EBS virtual machine.
Here are some important terms related to Oracle’s VM offerings:
- Oracle VM is Oracle’s own server virtualization platform. An Oracle VM template is one media format — the original media format — used to deliver a virtual machine within the Oracle VM framework.
- Oracle VirtualBox is Oracle’s own desktop virtualization platform. An Oracle VM appliance uses an industry-standard media format to deliver a virtual machine on top of VirtualBox. Because appliances use an industry standard format, they can in principle be deployed on third party virtualization platforms, but Oracle does not test those platforms.
- An Oracle VM Virtual Assembly is a format developed specifically for deployment using Enterprise Manager Cloud Control (EMCC). An assembly is powerful in that a single assembly contains multiple VM’s (not just a single VM like an appliance or a template) as well as the logic to connect those VM’s, allowing EMCC to install a multi-node system at the touch of a button. Customers who use Enterprise Manager and run Oracle VM can take advantage of these.
