64-bit Support for the E-Business Suite

[Oct 15, 2007 Update:  Added 64-bit platforms certified for Release 12]

[Sep 15, 2006 Update:  Clarified minimum requirements for 9iR2 and 10gR1 configurations.]

[May 24, 2006 Update:  This post has been revised with a clearer explanation of our certified configurations for 64-bit platforms.]

Here's a certification question that seems to recur in waves corresponding to hardware vendor announcements, namely, "Does the E-Business Suite work on 64-bit platforms?"

Itanium Chip:

The short answer is, "Yes, in a number of different configurations."

The following are the platforms supported for the application tier and the database tier of E-Business Suite Release 11i:
  • HP-UX PA RISC (64-bit)
  • Sun Solaris SPARC (64-bit)
  • IBM AIX (64-bit)
  • HP Tru64 UNIX (64-bit)
  • Windows x86 (32-bit)
  • Linux x86 (32-bit)
The following are the platforms supported for the application tier and the database tier of E-Business Suite Release 12:
  • HP-UX PA RISC (64-bit)
  • HP-UX Itanium (64-bit)
  • Sun Solaris SPARC (64-bit)
  • IBM AIX (64-bit)
  • Windows x86 (32-bit)
  • Linux x86 (32-bit)
  • Linux x86-64 (64-bit)
Supported via "Split Configurations"

In Release 11i, we certify and support a split configuration, where:
  • The database tier runs on a platform not supported for the application tier
  • The application server tier runs on one of the six platforms listed above
For the 9i Release 2 database (9iR2) and the 10g Release 1 database (10gR1), we support the following additional 64-bit platforms on the database tier in a split configuration for Release 11i:
  • HP-UX Itanium
  • Linux Itanium
  • Linux x86-64
  • Windows Server 2003 Itanium
9iR2 split configurations require the E-Business Suite Release 11.5.8 at minimum, and 10gR1 split configurations require 11.5.9 CU2 at minimum.

What About the 10gR2 Database?

[Editor Sep 15 Update:  For a discussion about the latest 10gR2 split configurations, see 10gR2 Database Split Configurations for Release 11i]

How About the Application Server Tier?

Application tier support on HP-UX Itanium as well as Linux x64 is planned for Release 12, and is being evaluated, but is not yet committed or planned, for Linux Itanium, Windows Itanium, and Windows x64.  Support for Sun Solaris SPARC, HP-UX PA RISC, and IBM AIX (all 64-bit) will be continued.

Sam:

What about IBM AIX? when will this platform be ceritified for 64 bit. or is it already?

Steven Chan:

Sam, I'm looking into our plans for AIX certification on 64-bit platforms. I'll provide an update as soon as possible.

Steven

Steven Chan:

Sam, our Product Line Engineering team has helpfully clarified our position on AIX and other 64-bit platforms. The post was been updated with this information now.

Steven

Paul Murgatroyd:

Hi Steven,

As you have also confirmed previously, HP Tru64 Unix is not likely to be a supported platform for Release 12. For anyone on this platform who wishes to upgrade to R12, this means a migration to another platform must be done as part of the upgrade.

Cheers,

Paul

Steven Chan:

Yes, that's correct.  Thanks for pointing that out, Paul.  Regards,Steven

Steven,
With Release 12 certified on both all 64bit on all nodes or 32bit on 64bit database nodes. Is there a recommendation from Oracle why all 64bit would be better that the traditional 32bit on 64bit?

thx,
John

Steven Chan:

Hi, John,Here's a reply excerpted from an internal discussion about your question:"If your question is why would someone choose to deploy a 64-bit database tier,
whether on a fully supported 11i platform (such as HP-UX PA RISC, Sun SPARC or
IBM AIX) or an 11i split configuration platform (such as Linux Itanium, Linux
x64, or Windows Itanium), the answer is scalability.  The large amount of
addressable memory not available on 32-bit platforms can handle many more
processes and connections."Regards,Steven

Bob:

I have a customer asking about 11i Split configuration information. When will Linux86-64 be certified for application and database tiers? It appears that the customer needs to move to R12 in order to have Linux86-64 on both apps and db tiers. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Bob

Steven Chan:

Hi, Bob,

There are no plans to certify 11i's application/middle tier on 64-bit Linux OS'es. If they want to use Linux x86-64 (64-bit) OS'es for both tiers, they must be on Release 12 (12.0 or higher).

Steven

Skumar:

Can I have the EBS 11.5.10.2 and DB 10.2.0.2 (64-Bit) running on the same Node ( Single tier ) ,wherein the OS is Redhat 5.2 - 64 bit version ...

Please suggest

Steven Chan:

Skumar,

No, I'm afraid this isn't possible for EBS 11i. RHEL 5 64-bit is certified only for the Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i database tier. Your application tier must be on a different fully-supported operating system.

Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 is certified on RHEL 5 64-bit for both the database and application tiers.

By the way, you should note that the 10.2.0.2 Database is now desupported. I'd recommend that you upgrade to the 10.2.0.4 DB level to keep your environment on a supported version.

Regards,
Steven
