E-Business Suite R12 Certified on 2012 Hyper-V Windows Guests

Microsoft LogoOracle E-Business Suite Release 12 (12.1) is now certified on Windows Server 2008 (32-bit) and Windows Server 2008 R2 running as guest operating systems within Window Server 2012 Hyper-V virtual machines.

Hyper-V is a built-in feature of Microsoft Windows Server that allows for the creation and management of virtualized computing environments. With this certification, the E-Business Suite is now supported on the above Windows virtualized guest operating systems in a similar way to non-virtualized Windows.

Comments:

Although I don't run EBS on Windows, I find this certification impressive if I'm reading this right.

Up until this point, Oracle would support (but not certify) things like Oracle on RHEL, Oracle on Dell servers, etc. It was only on solutions that were end to end on the Oracle stack (Oracle HW, Oracle OS, Oracle SW) that would be certified and supported.

It appears this is the first time where Oracle certifies a solution not entirely on the Oracle stack.

Is that correct?

hi Jay -
We do, actually, certify non-Oracle products in our technology/OS stack from vendors such as IBM (AIX), HP (HP-UX), Sun (prior to our purchase), MS, etc. We have been porting to non Oracle OSes for as long as the product has been around!
Incidentally, Red Hat Linux is also certified, and we consider it to be binary compatible with Oracle Linux.
Working closely and certifying products from platform vendors such as Microsoft is something we do as a matter of course, and this certification of is one such example of such a collaboration.
Best Regards,
John

Hi All.

It was stated that "is now certified on Windows Server 2008 (32-bit) and Windows Server 2008 R2 running as guest operating systems".

When EBS 12.1 will be certified for running Linux as guest operating systems within Window Server 2012 Hyper-V?

Thanks,
Daniel

Hello Anish -
Windows Server 2012 certification is planned for EBS and underlying technology stack products - Oracle Revenue Recognition policies disallow any disclosures of future certification dates, so please stay tuned to this blog site for updates.
In the words of MS (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/server-cloud/hyper-v-server/default.aspx):

"Hyper-V Server is a dedicated stand-alone product that contains the hypervisor, Windows Server driver model, virtualization capabilities, and supporting components such as failover clustering, but does not contain the robust set of features and roles as the Windows Server operating system."

Regards,
John

Hello David -
Oracle's policy with respect to VMWare is that of a 3rd party product policy as outlined in:
'Support Position for Oracle Products Running on VMWare Virtualized Environments' (MOS Note 249212.1)

Could you please advise the possible timeline or roadmap for certification of EBS 12.2 on RHEL 6.4 as guest on Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V?

Posted by Felipe Heredia on February 20, 2014 at 06:12 AM PST #

Felipe -
There are no current plans that I know to certify Oracle technology products (e.g. Database) on Linux as a guest OS in 2012 Hyper-V, so we (EBS) are similarly constrained.
Please refer to MOS Note 1563794.1 ('Certified Software on Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V') for our current official stance.
Regards,
John

Hi John,

According to MOS Note 1563794.1, it says,
#############
All Oracle products certified to run on Windows Server are also certified to run on Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V, whether used in a private cloud or public cloud (including Windows Azure) environment
#############

Thus based on this logic, EBS 12.2 is also certified with Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V, no matter its guest O.S. is Linux or Windows, please correct me if I'm wrong, thanks.

Thanks,
Chris

hi Chris -
The first line says:
"All Oracle products certified to run on Windows Server.."
Its intent is to convey that an Oracle product certified to run on Windows Server can run similarly on 2012 Hyper-V with Windows Server Server as a guest OS.
It does not imply certification on any guest OS running on Hyper-V. It does not say for example:
"All Oracle products certified to run on Windows Server and Linux..".
If you have further questions, please file an SR against the ST team who authored this note and who are responsible for this statement of support.
thanks,
John

Hi John,

According to MOS note 1563794.1, the following guest O.S. are certified on Windows 2012 Hyper-V. Thus, based on the statements below, could you please confirm whether EBS R12.2 is certified on on Windows 2012 Hyper-V with guest O.S. Linux 6.4? Thanks.

#############
List of Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V guest OSs includes:

Windows Server 2012
Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1
Oracle Linux 6.4
#############

#############
All Oracle products certified to run on Windows Server are also certified to run on Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V, whether used in a private cloud or public cloud (including Windows Azure) environment
#############
