Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) Workflow’s Notification Mailer sends and receives email notifications for the EBS Workflow Notification System. The EBS Workflow Notification Mailer can be configured with third-party IMAP and SMTP mail servers such as Microsoft’s Office 365 Exchange Online.

This blog article is to address queries regarding the compatibility of the EBS Workflow Notification Mailer with Microsoft’s Office 365 Exchange Online and the support for OAuth2.0.

What is Changing with Microsoft’s Update on Basic Authentication and Exchange Online?

Microsoft announced that effective October 1, 2022, Microsoft will begin to permanently disable basic authentication in all tenants, regardless of usage. See the following announcement for more information:

As mentioned in a previous blog article, this change is expected to impact EBS customers using Microsoft’s Office 365 Exchange Online as the mail server for the EBS Workflow Notification mailer.

What is required for the EBS Workflow Notification Mailer to work with OAuth2.0?

Client Credentials Flow is required by applications like EBS Workflow Notification Mailer to connect to Microsoft Office 365 Exchange Online using OAuth 2.0 based authentication over the IMAP protocol.

As of today, Microsoft does not support OAuth 2.0 access to IMAP protocol via Client Credentials grant flow. This feature is a requirement for EBS Workflow Notification mailer.

When will Microsoft Provide the Client Credential Flow for IMAP?

Microsoft acknowledged this requirement and has added it to their roadmap. This dependent feature is expected to be available by June 2022.

When will EBS Workflow Notification Mailer support OAuth2.0?

Rest assured, it is a top priority for us to proactively deliver the OAuth2.0 solution in Oracle E-Business Suite Workflow Notification Mailer for IMAP server connection to Microsoft Office 365 Exchange Online.

We understand the criticality of this requirement and the tight timeline between June 2022 and October 2022. Oracle E-Business Suite Workflow will be able to provide OAuth2.0 solution for Microsoft’s Office 365 Exchange Online after Microsoft delivers the above dependent feature.

Additional updates regarding this enhancement will be posted here on this blog. Thanks for your patience and stay tuned!
