I’ve been looking through a new book, Oracle Applications DBA Field Guide by Elke Phelps and Paul Jackson.

From the book’s introduction:

The Oracle Applications DBA Field Guide is a toolkit containing scripts, notes, references, and guidelines developed by experienced Oracle Applications DBAs to administer the E-Business Suite.  It contains proven tips and techniques on topics ranging from architecture, configuration, monitoring and troubleshooting, performance tuning, and patching.

This is a slim and conveniently small book, atypical of this category of guides, and I’m pleasantly surprised to see that it delivers neatly on its claims.  Phelps and Jackson have packed crisp architectural discussions, screenshots, tips, scripts, and pointers to key Metalink notes into a guide small enough to fit in a laptop bag’s accessory pocket.

Drawing upon their combined 17 years of experience as Oracle Applications DBAs, Phelps and Jackson have somehow managed to cover a broad range of technology stack topics while providing genuinely-useful sysadmin tips and pragmatic discussions in this little guide.

Verdict:  Essential reading for new Oracle Applications DBAs, and very useful reading even for experienced DBAs.
