Our recent article about using Advanced Compression with the E-Business Suite has generated a lot of excitement.  This 11gR1 database option
has a lot of potential, with its dual benefits of database size reduction and application speed increases.  Our Applications Performance Group is planning to do
some formal benchmarks of this technology with the E-Business Suite soon, but it looks like someone’s beaten them to the punch and published some quantitative comparisons for a simple testcase.

Hans van Hoogstraten is a Technical Specialist at OraOne, an Oracle Partner in the Netherlands.  Hans just did some simple tests of Advanced Compression with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12’s Vision
database.  He applied Advanced Compression to a copy of the gl.gl_balances table (6.4 million rows, ~650 MB) and ran some simple benchmarks.

The results were impressive even for this simple test scenario:

  • 70% reduction in disk space

  • 71% reduction in I/O from logical reads

  • 66% increase in running the Cumulative Balance Sheet report

Hans has written up this benchmark test here:

A tip of the hat to Hans for being the first to post a crisply-documented benchmark.  If anyone else has data that they’d like to share with our readers, feel free to post a URL here or drop me an email.
