OCI Ops Insights, (OPSI) service, part of the Oracle Cloud Observability and Management platform, is a cloud native-solution that helps gather, analyze telemetry data from various resources, and plan for enterprise growth. It helps perform data-driven capacity planning and performance management, thereby reducing enterprise capital expenditure and improving application throughput. The OPSI service team is pleased to introduce the general availability of Ops Insights for the HeatWave MySQL service on OCI. OPSI service is an extension to OCI Database Management service which caters to fleet monitoring, database performance management of HeatWave MySQL cloud service. Learn more about OPSI here. OPSI service usage incurs an additional cost on top of HeatWave MySQL cloud service subscription.
This new HeatWave MySQL DB system support in the Ops Insights service brings the best of ML-based resource usage trending and capacity planning, Data Explorer based performance analysis, and dashboard capabilities into Oracle Cloud. Note that this support is currently limited to primary cloud-based HeatWave MySQL DB system instances only, not failover or read-only replicas.
OCI Ops Insights feature summary and benefits
- Analyze resource usage of HeatWave MySQL and Oracle databases/hosts across the enterprise
- Forecast future demand for resources based on historical trends
- Compare SQL Performance over time in a single database or across databases
- Identify SQL performance patterns, and trends across enterprise-wide databases
- Utilize MySQL Data Objects to author custom SQL queries and explore database performance using dashboard framework
MySQL database capacity planning at scale
OPSI provides the following capacity planning features for HeatWave MySQL and Oracle databases deployed in OCI:
- Unified Capacity Planning user interface to analyze and predict capacity for HeatWave MySQL DB systems and Oracle databases, and analyze insights across the entire database fleet
- Leverage all the benefits of Capacity Planning including browsing Insights and Aggregate tabs at the CPU, Storage, Memory and I/O levels to right-size your database fleets
- Utilize AutoML based forecasting algorithms to forecast future consumption of underlying resources
- Set utilization thresholds alarms to be proactively informed of resource shortfalls for timely corrective actions

SQL Insights with MySQL capabilities
The SQL Insights application helps you analyze basic statistics for MySQL DB system databases. Statistics such as Average Active Sessions (AAS), CPU, Memory, Storage utilization, SQL-related statistics or MySQL DB system level performance and workload metrics can be analyzed using this feature. Choose the correct MySQL database scope filter and navigate to the following in-context dashboards:
- Fleet Analysis – top level dashboard that allows for a general overview of your entire set of MySQL databases enabled for Ops Insights within the selected compartment

-
Database Analysis – DB system dashboard that provides broad overview of the SQL workload executing in the database. This includes basic properties of the database and the SQL collected from it. SQL activity is shown by day broken down by command type and database, exposing changes in the workload over time. Average Active Session (AAS) by database schemas, latency type and Top SQLs additionally provide workload characteristics over time.

Data Explorer support for curated MySQL Database telemetry
Moreover, you can also utilize the newly added HeatWave MySQL DB systems specific data objects i.e., “MySQL Database Summary – Hourly” and “MySQL Database Statement – Daily” to explore, analyze, and visualize across various performance measures. You can create custom widgets and your own dashboards to satisfy your business requirements.
