Are you looking for insight on what it takes to grow and find success with the world’s cloud technology leader? Software engineer Aparna Aidith shares her Oracle journey in our next installment of Coder's Kitchen.
Read on to discover Aparna’s recipe for success in the exciting world of technology.
Top of mind
Aparna always aspired to become a Business Intelligence Developer or a Data Engineer. She loved working on SQL, data visualization, ETL, and reporting. After getting her Master’s in Information Technology and Management from the University of Texas in May 2019, she went after a position at Oracle. “When I thought about data and databases, the first company that always came to mind was Oracle. So I never had second thoughts when it came to applying for a job at the company,” Aparna remembers.
All in a day’s work
As a software engineer, Aparna works with SQL, business intelligence, and reporting to enhance our systems. “I apply my knowledge of software architecture to perform tasks associated with developing, debugging, or designing software applications or operating systems, according to provided design specifications,” she explains. “I also build enhancements within an existing software architecture and/or suggest improvements to it. Gathering information and building technical design documents is also part of what I do.” “My manager and colleagues give me ownership of my projects and guide me in the right direction to complete my tasks,” Aparna adds.
The stories were true
Before coming to Oracle, Aparna had heard about the company’s work culture and focus on work-life balance. It was only until she joined that she experienced it herself. “I enjoy the freedom Oracle gives to its employees: we can work at our convenience, which makes the environment very relaxed and productive at Oracle HQ—it’s a great workspace and location, with an awesome walking trail,” she says. “The flexibility to learn new technologies is another strong point I enjoy about the company’s culture. We get to learn a lot from the work we do.”
Learning, the special ingredient
For Aparna, cooking and coding are complementary activities. “Cooking is my passion and mind-booster, it helps me light up different parts of my brain to come up with those ‘eureka’ moments that help my coding flow,” she shares. Akin to cooking, Aparna believes there’s a recipe that you can follow to achieve success, with a very special ingredient at the center of it all. “Learn! Learn! Learn! Grab all the knowledge you can,” she tells fellow coders. “Find a mentor/role model and learn from them, too.”
Sharing her heritage
As a member of Oracle Professional Asian Leadership (OPAL), an employee resource group that inspires unity and leadership among Asian employees, Aparna is able to share her heritage with her colleagues and often swap recipes from other cultures! Moreover, the professional development and networking has helped foster her relationships at Oracle and beyond. “I joined OPAL because I love volunteering for events and being part of a group; I’ve been happily surprised by how much mentoring and sharing of knowledge it also provides.”
