Announcing MySQL HeatWave Migration Assistant — the newest way to move MySQL workloads to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) with ease!
Migrating critical databases to the cloud is often viewed as complex. That changes with the launch of the MySQL HeatWave Migration Assistant. This new tool is purpose-built to help organizations move their on-premises MySQL databases to MySQL HeatWave Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) on OCI—faster, more simply, and with far less hassle.
The MySQL Migration tool is included in the latest MySQL Workbench Package

Why MySQL HeatWave Migration Assistant makes it easy
- Step-by-step workflow: Follow an intuitive, graphical wizard—no manual scripts or deep cloud expertise required.
- End-to-end automation: The assistant can set up cloud accounts, compartments, networking, and secure connectivity, or let you select from existing resources for flexibility
- Optimized for speed: Parallel data transfer and import accelerate migrations—even for large workloads
- Complete migration: Handles schema, data, user accounts, and replication setups, with guided compatibility checks and recommendations
- Minimal downtime: Supports “hot” migrations with live replication, keeping databases in sync and enabling a smooth switch-over when you’re ready
Note: You can migrate MySQL databases (version 5.6 or newer) to MySQL HeatWave DB systems on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).
How the Migration Works
- Prepare and Authenticate: Log in to OCI (or create an account) and configure cloud resources with guided help.
- Compatibility and Planning: Built-in checks identify and address any issues in advance, while the Assistant prepares a tailored migration plan.
- Parallel Data Movement: Accelerated data transfer uses multiple streams for efficiency—ideal for both small and multi-terabyte datasets.
- Live Replication for Hot Cutover: For near-zero downtime, replication keeps your on-prem and OCI databases synchronized until the final cutover.
- Ready for Use: Once cutover is complete, your MySQL HeatWave instance is ready for OLTP, analytics, AI workloads, and more—with all permissions and schema intact.

Key Advantages
- Designed for both small and large enterprise databases
- Real-time progress monitoring from start to finish
- Cloud networking and secure channels handled automatically
- Simple, reliable cutover with minimal disruption
Before you migrate
The migration wizard takes you through all the steps allowing you to take actions for you or just select what you have already put in place.
At a high level it will
- Create a new OCI account (or prompt for login)
- Create a new or select an existing compartment for MySQL HeatWave (OCI compartments define security, access controls, and isolation)
- Help configure your local environment
- Create cloud networking, required secure connectivity, and temporary storage
- Set up host and SSH tunneling, plus object storage for data synchronization
- Run compatibility checks and propose next steps* Creating your cloud networking (this is where many fail)
- The wizard highlights any required environment tweaks to ensure a seamless migration. You’ll be shown a summary plan and can click “start” when ready.

Time to Migrate – In parallel and fast as possible

The Migration Assistant maximizes speed by running processes in parallel: Data simultaneously streams to OCI Object Storage and loads into MySQL HeatWave as your cloud instance deploys. For hot migrations, a replication channel keeps the new service synchronized with your on-premises database until you’re ready for cutover. To complete, simply stop local writes, allow final synchronization, then point applications and users to MySQL HeatWave.
