Oracle Academy, Oracle’s global philanthropic educational program, is open to educators worldwide to advance technology education, skills, innovation, diversity, and inclusion. Oracle Academy offers education resources in several tiers – ‘Academy Bytes’, workshops, and complete curriculum – to instructors and students at no cost. Oracle Academy also produces the Oracle Academy Tech Chat podcast and shares news with Academy members on their blog. In this post, we will highlight some of the MySQL content available to Oracle Academy members.

Academy Bytes

The Oracle Academy website notes that “Oracle Academy Education Bytes are short, flexible learning modules that teach new concepts and enhance existing knowledge and skills, problem-solving, creativity, and learning retention. They can be used to enhance Oracle Academy curriculum or alone as learning resources.” There are several MySQL-specific Bytes available.

MySQL: Installing MySQL

For learners just beginning to explore database software, trying to install and configure the server and client tools can be intimidating. The “Installing MySQL” Byte is designed to help learners quickly get MySQL Community server, MySQL Shell, and MySQL Workbench installed on their local computers. Whether they are using Windows or Mac OS, this step-by-step guide will have learners up and running with MySQL in no time.

MySQL: Document Store Introduction

Over the last few years, “NoSQL” databases, used for storing JSON documents, have become very popular. MySQL Document Store is a NoSQL implementation built on top of MySQL. With the “Document Store Introduction” Byte, learners will be guided through the basics of creating Document Store schemas and collections and how to create, update, delete, and retrieve JSON documents from a Document Store.

Podcast Episodes

In addition to these resources, I also had the pleasure of being a guest on two Oracle Academy Tech Chat podcast episodes.

What Is Data?

In this episode, I spoke with Tyra Crocket about data and its use in today’s world, how data differs from information, and some real-world examples of how data and information are used to make informed decisions.

Data Security Basics – How and why you should secure your data

For this episodeChris Saxon and I discuss data security. The conversation discussed what steps users can take to safeguard their data online and what DBAs and developers should do to help keep that data safe from nefarious individuals.

More To Come

In the future, more MySQL-specific content will be available in Oracle Academy. We will make announcements on this blog when those resources become available.
