The MySQL community team with local user groups and partners organize MySQL meetups around the world. Below are some of the ones we’ve hosted recently and we hope to bring more user group activities soon.

SMUG Meetup, November 30th, from 5pm to 8pm

MySQL team in cooperation with Etraveli hold a MySQL Meetup (SMUG) in Gothenburg, Sweden on November 30.

The meetup was hosted by Etraveli at their amazing new office. We had 16 people attending the event this time, our first event in Gothenburg.

Axel Wiberg from Etraveli started the session by delivering a session on how they are using MySQL within Etraveli and the journey they have done with MySQL.

After this Ted Wennmark, the MySQL Solution Architect, EMEA shared latest news from MySQL with also some OCI/HW stuff. You can find Ted’s presentation here.

We had some snacks, drinks, and lots of pizzas during the event full of discussion and meeting old and new friends. Last people left around 21:00… 😉

As a first speaker after the morning coffee and welcome, Narciso Oliveira Junior, the MySQL Cloud Evangelist/Oracle, talked about Evaluating Large Data Loads and Analysis with MySQL HeatWave Lakehouse, where the audience could learn more about how MySQL HeatWave Lakehouse is used to efficiently load, analyze and run Machine Learning algorithms on large amounts of heterogeneous data.

After another coffee break, Herbert Rogério Bezerra de Menezes, the MySQL Master Principal Solution Engineer/Oracle talked about MySQL Shell for Database Engineers as the best MySQL administration tool showing the main features of MySQL Shell.

Just before the lunch, Roberto Garcia de Bem from Percona talked about ProxySQL on MySQL – Just a load balancer? Where Roberto pointed the ProxySQL as an OS proxy communicating through the MySQL protocol and about the other ProxySQL features.

Brazil2

Leonardo Bacchi Fernandes then talked about Tools and methods for performance analysis in MySQL using real cases as a basis.

Second last presentation was given by Ricardo Rodrigues shared the information about data center migration to Oracle OCI Brazil: MySQL 8 Optimalization, where he talked about successful migration to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure in Brazil.

The last presenter was great Vinicius Grippa talking about 7 Golden tips and 7 mistakes to avoid when using MySQL.
See the presentations uploaded here.

We had more than 50 people physically attended, 4 Percona Support Engineers working in the event & 5 Oracle Engineers helping with the event. We had a plenty of chances to discuss to each other over a snack, lunch and breaks in a great atmosphere. Several swags were given away from Percona and Oracle including 7 Books about Learning MySQL donated.

We received a great feedback after the event on social media, we would like to share just some of them as well.

MySQL Meetup Prague, Czech Republic & Bratislava, Slovak Republic, 5-8pm

MySQL Community team in cooperation with MariaDB meetup organized two meetups together, with the same agenda, but different place. The first one was hold on Dec 4 in Oracle office, Prague and second took place in Seznam.cz office in Bratislava, Slovakia on Dec 6th.

We had 2 presentations, first one with Carsten Thalheimer, MySQL Master Principal Solution Engineer at Oracle. He gave a talk about MySQL HeatWave, Oracle’s approach to a cloud-based MySQL solution. According to Carsten’s presentation, the future of MySQL lies in cloud, with cloud-based managed services offering more data processing capabilities than standard MySQL instances.

Second talk was given by Michal Kuchta, SW Engineer and Roman Vaněrek, DBA team lead, both from Seznam.cz, presented on MariaDB replication strategies and discussed how MariaDB adoption at Seznam.cz evolved from basic setups to MariaDB as a service. This included delivering large-scale automated cluster deployment and management for customers. Participants had the opportunity to learn the theory behind MariaDB replication, understand how it works and gain insights into why Galera Cluster works so well. Later, they discovered what it takes to apply this theoretical knowledge to automate hundreds of clusters with just five people.

In Prague we got about 13 people, however in Slovakia the talks attracted over fifty participants who actively listened and participated in the following Q&A session.

Both events provided an excellent opportunity to meet people from the industry and discuss their everyday struggles with databases. The networking part of the meetup served as a pleasant conclusion to the event, where participants could discuss common problems during a delicious dinner or snack.

Many thanks to all the participants, the speakers, and both Oracle and Seznam.cz for organizing such a magnificent event. We hope to see you all in the future at the next event.

Mary Christmas and Happy New Year!
