When you think about the technology powering your favorite apps, the latest advances in AI, or the streaming platforms you use every day, you might forget what’s going on behind the scenes. All of these services rely on something essential but invisible to most people: data centers.

But what exactly is a data center—and why should you care about starting a thriving career in one, even if you’ve never considered tech before? Let’s find out.

What is a data center, and why does it matter?

Imagine a data center as the “engine room” of the internet—a super-sized, ultra-secure facility filled with powerful computers that store, process, and send information all over the world, 24/7. When you scroll through social media, check your bank balance on your phone, or interact with smart home devices, you’re benefiting from the work done inside a data center.

Now, with the rapid growth of AI and cloud computing, data centers have become more critical than ever. They’re not just supporting our online habits—they’re driving the next wave of innovation and technology.

How data centers power AI

AI is transforming the way we live, work, and solve global challenges—but it’s only possible because of the advanced computing power inside data centers. Every time an AI system learns, analyzes data, or answers your questions, it’s tapping into the complex networks and hardware within these facilities. In short, data centers are the “brains” behind AI—making breakthroughs in all kinds of fields possible.

Plenty of companies are building data centers, but Oracle is leading the way in this space. And that means big career opportunities, even for people who never thought they’d work in tech.

No experience? No problem.

Let’s bust a myth: you don’t need a four-year college degree or previous data center experience to get started at Oracle’s Abilene data center. Some of our most successful data center technicians started their careers in retail, construction, warehouse work, manufacturing, and food service, or right out of high school.

Oracle also offers many additional training opportunities for employees looking to expand their expertise in various areas with resources that encompass a diverse range of topics, like technical skills development, project management, and communication.

What skills do you need?

People with backgrounds in trades like HVAC, electrical, or plumbing, or from vocational and technical programs, bring in valuable skills—but curiosity, a good attitude, and a commitment to safety are the main requirements. If you’re responsible, eager to learn, enjoy working with your hands, and have good communication skills, you already have what you need to get started.

What will you do?

As a data center technician, you’ll:
• Monitor and maintain the hardware and infrastructure that keep Oracle’s cloud running
• Troubleshoot and repair equipment
• Ensure the site stays secure and operational
• Learn new systems and technologies—all while earning a paycheck

You’ll also get paid, hands-on training with experienced mentors (you don’t have to walk in the door as an expert). Plus, our work-based learning program takes people all the way from “never worked in tech” to “confident, contributing team member.”

What do we look for?
• Willingness to learn new skills and tools.
• Dependability and attention to detail—safety is our top priority.
• Teamwork, communication, and a positive approach to problem-solving.

Is there room to grow?

A role in data centers is just the beginning of long-term tech career growth. Many of our technicians move up quickly to senior roles, specialize in networking or electrical systems, or even manage whole teams like Melissa Russell, a senior field support manager who leveraged a background in hospitality and education into a whole new career. The skills you gain are also in high demand, both at Oracle and throughout the entire tech industry. Our pay and benefits are pretty great, too!
