Oracle Academy Day at Nova Pioneer Schools for Innovators and Leaders, Kenya, held on October 4, 2024, was a practical event aimed at equipping the computer club students with key technical skills and igniting their interest in technology. The workshop featured a special Knowledge Builder session that introduced students to foundational Java programming and database skills in an engaging and practical manner. The event consisted of two sessions designed to provide hands-on experience in Java programming and SQL for database management.
The first session delved into SQL, an effective tool widely used across various industries for managing and analyzing data. Students learned how to write basic SQL queries to retrieve and manipulate data from databases, equipping them with the skills to solve real-world problems through data analysis. This workshop aimed to provide students with a foundational understanding of how data works and how it can be used to make informed decisions. By the end of the session, students had acquired an essential skill that is highly sought after in today’s data-driven world, providing them with a strong foundation for future careers in technology and business.
In the second session, students were introduced to Java programming using Alice, a visual programming environment that makes coding accessible and fun. Alice allows users to create 3D animations, stories, and simple games, which help students grasp key programming concepts in an interactive way. The workshop was designed to be beginner-friendly, ensuring that even students with no prior coding experience could follow along and create their own projects. By the end of the session, the students had learned the basic building blocks of Java programming while developing problem-solving skills and logical thinking. The visual nature of Alice made the learning experience engaging and enjoyable.
“Once a new technology rolls over you, if you’re not part of the steamroller, you’re part of the road,” said Andrew Meraba, Nova Pioneer Tatu City Boys School Leader. “This practical workshop will inspire our Novaneers to explore technology as a field of study and potential career path, giving them the tools to become future innovators and problem-solvers.”
The Knowledge Builder events are a part of Oracle Academy’s broader initiative to make technology education accessible to students around the world. By offering hands-on learning experiences in Java and SQL, Oracle Academy provided these students with an opportunity to gain practical skills that are critical in the digital age. The event was facilitated by Oracle Academy and the Oracle Kenya-Presidential Digital Training Program Alumni.
