The University of Malaga (UMA), Spain, a proud member of the Oracle Academy, recently hosted a successful hackathon name “Malackathon” on October 17-18, 2024. The event attracted 227 students across 50 teams, who took on the challenge of addressing “Clean Water and Sanitation,” one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations.
Oracle Academy played a crucial role by providing participants with access to Oracle Academy Cloud Program resources. These Oracle Cloud accounts allowed the students to create Oracle Autonomous Database instances and virtual machines, facilitating their innovative projects. Each team developed a mobile-friendly web application to display reservoir data within a 100 km radius. The objective was to manage and distribute water resources efficiently, addressing Spain’s severe drought challenges. Teams also enhanced their solutions with innovative ideas for water management in the Malaga area.
The kickoff event saw participation from sponsors and partners, including Accenture, Airzone, Indra, Mercedes-Benz, and NTT Data. Oracle’s contributions ensured that students had the necessary cloud resources to develop their solutions effectively.
An important aspect of the challenge was to provide accurate data about reservoirs, including the amount of water remaining at the end of each year, allowing for informed decisions on water transfer based on historical data.
This Malackathon not only showcased the talent and creativity of the students but also highlighted the essential role that technology and collaboration play in addressing global challenges. With the support from Oracle Academy, future innovators are empowered to create solutions that can make a real difference in the world.
