For the third year in a row, Faculty of Information Technology of the University “Mediterranean“ Podgorica, Montenegro, took part in International Girls in ICT Day, an initiative celebrated across the globe, dedicated to encouraging girls to pursue careers in information and communication technologies (ICT) as well as in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. This day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of April each year.

Girls competed in mobile application development, showcasing inclusion in the ICT sector. Girls from high schools across Montenegro were invited to take part in the competition, and there were more than 30 teams of girls who applied for participation. The theme of the competition was “Solutions for Women’s Everyday Lives.” The girls offered an interesting blend of technology knowledge as well as empathy, resilience, and innovation.

As a preparation for the competition, 15 teams of high school girls attended a two-day training event onsite at University “Mediterranean” in Podgorica, and other teams were able to attend the same training event online, and watch the recording afterwards. During those two days, participants learned many interesting things about ICT, idea development and presenting, as well as how to use the Thunkable platform (https://thunkable.com/) to develop mobile applications. The girls were able to practice their knowledge and gain valuable experience during the training sessions and interactive workshops. The training was organized and delivered by students and professors of the Faculty of Informational Technology. At the end of the training, a professor from the Faculty of Visual Arts delivered an art therapy class with the theme “My Perfect Island”.

The day of the competition started with great energy. Girls were presented with motivational messages of successful women from the ICT sector and recorded messages from female students of the Faculty of IT, showcasing their self-confidence and passion for ICT.

Although the original plan was to have only 10 best teams of girls in the competition, the quality was so high that organizers decided to extend it to 18 teams from 10 Montenegrin municipalities. The applications that the teams created were amazing, using technology to ease the everyday life of women in the 21st century. The winning teams developed: a personalized virtual wardrobe app, a mentorship and guidance app, and a safety-focused app, among others.

During the competition the girls were able to show their creativity, curiosity, and talent for technology through practical tasks and teamwork. The whole project was truly inspirational for everyone involved, and connecting and inclusive for the community.
