Four ways Oracle is helping veterans grow their careers

Oracle celebrates Veterans Day to honor and reflect on those who have served in the United States military. While the annual holiday allows us to recognize the dedication of these service men and women, Oracle continues to be committed to being an ally and providing opportunities to enter the civilian workforce year-round.

MAVEN, Oracle’s Military Affiliated Veteran Employee Network, was founded on Veterans Day in 2015 to serve the veteran community and provide them with a standard of excellence. Merriam Dictionary describes a MAVEN as “experienced or knowledgeable” – this speaks directly to the core of our military affiliated community and the value of our mission to impact the greater Oracle community, while committing to honor and serve with a sense of purpose towards our collective success for all by leveraging our unique customs, traditions, and military experiences.

This has been even more poignant during COVID-19 when the pandemic increased pressure on all workers. The annual AI@Work study conducted by Oracle and Workforce Intelligence queried more than 14,600 employees, managers, HR leaders, and C-level executives across 13 countries about how technology will help companies address the challenges facing the workforce. According to the study, 93% of people used the past year to reflect on their personal and professional lives and over 80% are ready to make changes, even though 75% of people feel “stuck” professionally.

How can employers, who are already dealing with a broader crisis in the workforce, tailor professional development and employee support to address the specific needs of the veteran community? Here are four ways MAVEN is helping veterans navigate the complex professional terrain.

Open new doors with internships

Military veterans have experience and skills that can make a real positive impact in a professional environment. But making the transition from the military culture to a corporate culture can be challenging. To address this gap, Oracle leverages the Oracle Veteran Internship Program (OVIP), which uses Oracle Cloud HCM technology for the recruiting and hiring process, and the Veteran Guidon Program that connects veteran mentors with transitioning service members and military spouses.

The programs help interns gain valuable skills and hands-on technical training across multiple technology platforms like Slack, Jira, and Oracle Content Management. They also get access to the professional development tools used internally to build hard and soft skills, such as Oracle University, Oracle learning paths, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure certifications.

The importance of this exposure to technology is reflected in the AI@Work survey, which found that 87% of respondents believe their company should be doing more to listen to the needs of their workforce, and 55% are more likely to stay with a company that uses AI to support their career growth. By having OVIP interns gain technology skills to better adapt to the changing professional environment and add to their skills portfolio to better integrate with today’s corporate culture.

Make veteran recruitment a priority

In addition to internships, Oracle has robust veteran recruiting programs. Two of these include the Oracle NetSuite Solutions Consulting Academy for Pre-Sales and SuiteVets, both focused on in-depth insights into Oracle technologies, systems, tools, and sales organizations.

Oracle also strategically coordinates with our public sector groups to bring in individuals with security clearances, which differentiates Oracle and allows us to meet our public sector customer needs. These efforts include continuously hiring for business development consulting roles and expanding their outreach to hire military spouses. All these programs help provide Oracle with a rich community of veteran-affiliated talent.

Connect veterans with a broad professional network

The AI@Work study notes people are working to regain control of their lives in the wake of the pandemic, with 74% feeling like they have control over their professional lives going into 2022 and 85% of people want technology to help define their future. According to the study, 80% of those surveyed want to make career changes over the next year; Oracle wants to make it easier for veterans to do just that by supporting this community by using the Oracle mentoring platform and recruiting via LinkedIn, to bridge the military and workplace both internally and externally.

MAVEN makes professional networking a priority by pairing mentors with new hires, prioritizing inclusive recruitment practices, and driving community engagement to build a greater veteran ecosystem. Knowing that Oracle is committed to giving back to the military affiliated community allows MAVEN to continue to serve beyond the military. Providing mentorship and networking opportunities for our community leads to partnerships and strategic engagements that build collaborative relationships. This is a huge win for Oracle as it contributes to brand awareness, attracts top veteran talent, and increases retention and loyalty.

Maintain health and well-being

Rounding out MAVEN’s mission is the personal health and wellbeing of our members. Both 2020 and 2021 proved to be hard years that left people feeling vulnerable, so much so that the AI@Work study notes 80% of people were impacted negatively, with many struggling financially (29%), suffering from declining mental health (28%), lacking career motivation (25%), and feeling disconnected from their own lives (23%). According to the Military Support Initiative, military families reported a 23% increase in mental health symptoms, while 25% of respondents report that their mental health needs are not being met.

MAVEN leaned into this challenging time and provided opportunities for more wellness activities, social engagements, and mindfulness sessions for members to learn and decompress, including our MAVEN 11 Veteran’s Day physical fitness challenge, PsychArmor session (a learning resource for veterans), and Keynote speaker event leading up to celebrating Veteran’s Day this year. By allowing our community time to re-evaluate their situations and take charge of their complete health, it has helped provide clarity and opportunity for transformation and growth.

We are excited to see how our expanding community efforts will continue to help close the gap for transitioning veterans, agile military spouses, and support retention at Oracle.
