Expert Overview
Jeff Moyer is a Technical Lead on the Oracle Consulting Services (OCS) implementation team and focuses on understanding customers’ data and integration needs and how the Oracle Permitting and Licensing software will meet those needs. Like many of the folks on the OCS team, Jeff started his career working in government and believes that prepared him to work alongside public sector customers. Let’s check in with Jeff to learn more about him, his role on the OCS team, and his plans.
Q: You first started your career working for the City of Madison, WI…how did that inform how you approach working with public sector customers today?
A: Working in government is a great experience for a number of reasons. For me, I appreciated working with folks who had a wide range of backgrounds, but all came to work for the public good. The job also required attention to detail as some of the processes I worked on were very intricate, and as a general rule, required a level of transparency that private organizations don’t typically require. Being able to work well with others, be detail-oriented, and be open with my peers and customers have all served me very well!
Q: Can you describe your role as a Technical Lead in OCS?
A: I focus on the more technical aspects of the product, which include:
- Data conversion: understanding customer data, assessing the quality of it, and managing the process of taking it from the agency’s old system, cleaning the data, and loading it into the Oracle system.
- Integrations: setting up integrations between the Oracle system and endpoints such as ESRI, payment processors, and more.
- Reporting: creating custom reports and document templates.
- Development Tools: building tools the OCS team can use to streamline and expedite implementation work.
Q: What’s an example of a technical challenge you enjoyed working on?
A: On my first Oracle Permitting and Licensing project we were implementing code enforcement which was a new feature-set within the product. The existing data conversion tool we had wasn’t set up for the code enforcement data, so I developed a Python utility to help with the process. It worked out great and I still use a version of that utility today.
Q: Are there any observations – technical in nature – that you consistently see on projects?
A: The Oracle product is highly configurable and does not require a lot of technical expertise (such as coding or customization) to administer the business functions within the application. As part of the implementation, we’ll show customers how to administer the application and they are consistently surprised by the ease of doing things like updating application forms, adjusting fees, and working with the workflow design tool.
Q: Now that travel is normalizing again, where is one place you’re looking forward to visiting?
A: Prior to the COVID pandemic, my wife and I visited Spain and Portugal and had a fantastic time. Since then, we have been very interested in traveling to Italy and are in the early stages of planning a trip there.
