Annkush Nigam joined the ranks at Oracle Cloud Infrastructure over four years ago, but his enthusiasm for his role as senior software development manager has only grown in the time spent with the company. Building a global team of self-starters, he encourages an ethos of continuous learning and mutual respect. As is the case for most Oracle employees, Annkush finds himself learning something new every day. Here’s how he’s leading his team to software development success, year after year.

Cross-border collaboration

One of the aspects that most excites Annkush about life at Oracle is its international status and reputation for hiring globally diverse teams. Despite being separated by bodies of water, he has made it his mission to ensure everyone is as connected as possible. However, he emphasizes that in order for projects to be executed properly, his colleagues need to be able to self-motivate and get the job done, even when he’s not physically there to push them.

“My team is spread across geographies, and all the members are self-motivated, mature and responsible individuals, striving to deliver the best while keeping customer priorities on top. Our team works on the latest cutting-edge technologies to solve some of the world’s most difficult business problems,” he explains.

As well as being able to motivate themselves, he wants to work with people interested in continuous learning and self-development, something he finds by the bucket load in the people at Oracle, “As technical professionals, I would also like my team to keep itself updated with the latest technologies and build world-class platforms to make OCI the best cloud solutions provider globally.”

Management that cares about career progression

As Annkush spent more time adjusting to the Oracle model, he found himself quickly seeking growth and opportunities to move up the ladder. Working in an environment that promotes both professional and personal development helped him strive to reach his full potential.

He says, “Being at Oracle, I got ample opportunities to work on diverse kinds of projects. Working on these projects alongside a diversified group taught me how to successfully complete projects and manage people across the board to excel at customer expectations. Oracle recognized my efforts and helped me progress into senior positions.”

What does he think is the key to career progression when it comes down to it? He reflects, “I would say hard work, perseverance and dedication towards your goal. Senior management at Oracle does recognize your hard work and will provide opportunities once you’re ready for the next level in your career.”

Tackling trouble as a team

Ultimately, whilst he loves his work, it’s the people he’s met along the way that have made the biggest impression on the senior manager. No matter the severity of the problem, he can always count on his team to rally round and tackle the challenge head on, with communicative collaboration.

“I’ve met people who are smart, confident, and humble. They have the best technical skills and are excited to solve the toughest and craziest problems in the world. It seems that the word “NO” doesn’t exist here when it comes to technical challenges,” he shares.

Annkush’s answer to the perfect new hire

When it comes to hiring, Annkush has some non-negotiables and specific qualities he looks out for. He urges new hires to “be self-motivated and willing to solve problems. Apart from being a true technician, you must be open to learning new skills, multitasking and be respectful to others opinions and ideas.”

Annkush concludes with his most valuable career advice: “Think thoroughly before you act, but don’t hesitate to act even if you make mistakes. You will grow in your career based only on your actions.”
