Andrew Morawski recently celebrated his five-year anniversary at Oracle and we took the opportunity to sit down with him to discuss his career journey, leadership, internal mobility, and what keeps him motivated. As the leader of Oracle Communications, Andrew has had a remarkable journey, and his insights offer a unique perspective on what it means to drive innovation in a constantly evolving and competitive space.
Unique perspective
Andrew’s career has been marked by a series of leadership roles in telecoms but when asked about his current role, the enthusiasm is clear: “I think I’m actually quite fortunate. I’ve probably got one of the best jobs in all of Oracle! It’s a really exciting segment to be in.” Coming from the fast-moving world of telecommunications has given him a unique perspective on the communication challenges and opportunities facing Oracle’s customers.
Before joining Oracle, Andrew held leadership roles at major global telecommunications companies including Vodafone, Cable & Wireless, and Telstra, where he focused on driving innovation in connectivity, cloud solutions, and IoT (Internet of Things). “I never thought it was possible to make the jump from telecoms to tech. I’ve been both a supplier and a customer of Oracle and was always impressed with any engagement that I had,” he adds.
His knowledge of the IoT space has been invaluable in his current role, where he manages sales, strategic planning, product development, product management, consulting, service, and global support globally for Oracle Communications products.
Depth of talent
When asked what attracted him to Oracle in the first place, Andrew is quick to mention how impressed he was by the company’s capabilities and the quality of its people. “As an outsider, you don’t really get a sense of the powerful machine that Oracle is. Everything here happens so fast, and you need to be really adaptable. And that’s one of the reasons why it’s such a fun place to work.”
He also notes that our culture and values align with his own. “I think what probably surprised me most is the quality of the people and the depth of talent at Oracle.” Andrew’s experience has been shaped by a commitment to innovation and customer focus. Here, he’s found a culture that’s always primed to adapt to changing market conditions and willing to take risks to stay ahead of the competition.
“It elevates your thinking just being here and seeing so many perspectives, what’s happening in the industry, and the forward-looking view,” he explains.
People first
However, it’s all about people in Andrew’s view—reaching them as customers or motivating them as teams. His leadership style is characterized by a focus on empowerment. “I think I’m a bit of an enigma,” he elaborates. “I’m people-focused, empowering, and collaborative, but at the same time execution-focused. It’s a bunch of different styles wrapped into one.” Effective teams are put together and given what they need to get the job done—it’s proven to be a powerful approach.
“I hire really good people and then we work together to set a direction. I don’t mandate or dictate. Together we focus on creating the best environment possible for the organization to foster success.” He also emphasizes that it takes a dash of humility to give people that kind of autonomy. “I make sure that everyone around me is smarter than I am, and that certainly helps a lot!” he shares.
“I don’t micromanage what they do. We find the right people and they’re the right people because you trust them to do the job right.”
Opportunities ahead
When asked about the future of Oracle and the communications industry, Andrew is excited about the potential ahead. “AI is the biggest buzzword right now. I think we’ve got tremendous amounts of opportunity. When you tie that to the cloud and our applications, and layer that on top of that industry, I don’t think there’s any company out there that can do what Oracle can do.”
Andrew believes that Oracle is well-positioned to play a leading role in communications, particularly in cloud and AI. “We’ve got the right technology stack, the right team, and most importantly, we understand what our customers need to succeed. We’re not just helping them adapt to change—we’re helping them lead it.”
Sustainability is an essential part of how Oracle gets it done. “Like any parent, I want to leave my kids a better world. Most business leaders want to prioritize sustainable solutions in communications where energy is around 40% of operating expenses.”
“Moving to public cloud alone is like taking 22 million cars off the road in emissions. That is a real, tangible impact from an Oracle perspective. I’m particularly proud that we’re targeting 100% renewable energy use.”
Aspiring leaders
When asked for advice for aspiring leaders, Andrew emphasizes the importance of authenticity, curiosity, and a willingness to learn. Added together, these qualities let you step into another person’s shoes more effectively and understand their perspective.
“Authenticity is the biggest one. That breeds trust, and trust is foundational to everything that you need to do or get done.” He also recommends setting aside time to learn and stay current with industry trends. “I have an hour blocked out in my calendar every single week to just read trade magazines and articles. It’s definitely helped my continued growth.”
Andrew also loops back to the importance of building a strong team and creating a positive work culture as part of anyone’s leadership journey. You can’t show the way if nobody is there to follow. “I think it’s really important to find good human beings, not just people with the right skills and expertise. You want people who are going to fit your team, who are going to be able to work together, and who are going to be able to support each other.”
Mentorship and giving back
Andrew is a strong believer in the importance of mentorship and giving back to the community. He’s been involved with the Oracle Women’s Leadership (OWL) program and has mentored several people during his career. “I think it’s really important to give back. I’ve had several mentors and coaches that have been incredibly important to me throughout my career and have helped shape me as the person that I am today. I’ve always committed to making sure that I find time to mentor folks.”
Andrew’s leadership career at Oracle has only grown along with the company’s commitment to innovation, customer focus, and employee growth. Today, with the future promising to expand the potential of AI and the cloud even further, the future looks bright for leadership opportunities here.
