Data Center Technician
As we honor Military Appreciation Month this May, Oracle is proud to recognize the contributions and sacrifices of our nation’s veterans. This month, we’re shining the spotlight on Matt Meinke, a new hire in our data center in Abilene, Texas, and an Army veteran with 16 years of service. Matt’s story highlights not only the skills and values that veterans bring, it shows the power of a great culture to bring them to their full potential.
Army to Oracle
Matt joined the United States Army to serve his country and build a strong foundation for his future. During his service, he worked in several roles, including electromagnetic spectrum management, where he developed skills in communications, planning, and operating under pressure. Little did he know at the time, these skills would prove invaluable in civilian life.
When it was time to transition out of the military, Matt was drawn to the tech industry, and Oracle stood out as a top choice for its fusion of hardware and software innovation.
“I’ve always liked tech and problem-solving,” he shares. “When it was time to transition out of the military, the tech world just made sense. Oracle stood out because of its size, the kind of work being done, and the way it supports veterans. It felt like a place where I could grow.”
Military skills get results
As a data center technician, Matt helps us build the systems and infrastructure that are driving innovations like the AI revolution. That includes everything from installs and cabling to getting facilities operational. And his hunch about professional growth was soon proven right. Data center careers are a great fit for veterans, who often possess the skills and discipline needed to succeed in these rewarding roles.
Altogether, it’s been challenging but exciting—and thanks to Oracle’s experience with integrating veteran talent, Matt is thriving. In fact, he’s found that his military experience has prepared him well for his new responsibilities.
“A lot of what I do now isn’t all that different from what I did in uniform!” Matt notes. “I’m used to high-stakes environments where attention to detail matters. The ability to stick to a process, troubleshoot quickly, and stay calm when things go sideways—that all came from my time in the Army.”
Thriving in Abilene
Abilene itself is a thriving city, and although Matt is still getting to know the area, he already appreciates the lively atmosphere and lower cost of living. Most of all, he’s been impressed by the supportive environment at Oracle, which has made his transition from military to civilian life much smoother.
“Everyone’s on the same team, working toward shared goals. It’s a really supportive environment, and that’s made a big difference for me coming in from the military,” he adds.
Oracle has always been committed to supporting veterans in their transition to civilian life. Our Military Affiliated Veteran Employee Network (MAVEN) provides a community and resources for veterans to connect, share experiences, and grow in their careers. It’s something Matt has found valuable resource in his own transition.
“I did join MAVEN, and it was a great resource,” he explains. “It helped me make the switch from military to civilian a little easier, and it’s nice knowing that kind of community is there if I need it.”
Celebrating Military Appreciation Month
For Matt, this all comes together at Military Appreciation Month. It’s a time to reflect on the sacrifices he and his fellow veterans have made—and to be thankful for the opportunities available. Today, he believes that companies can best show their support for veterans by empowering them.
“It means a lot to me,” Matt says. “It’s a reminder of the people I served with and the sacrifices we all made. I think the best way companies can support veterans is by being open to their experience and giving them space to grow in a new environment.”
Oracle is no stranger to this and has been recognized for its commitment to veterans several times, including being named a VETS Indexes 4 Star Employer. We’re proud of our track record as a great place to work for those who’ve served, and we’re always excited to welcome more veterans as we expand.
