For Nagesh Patil, one thing that gets him out of bed when his alarm goes off in the morning, is the continuous education he’s receiving at work, curiosity to learn and ensure his team contributes and consistently delivers value to the organization. A software development manager at Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), he takes advantage of every training session and digital resource at his fingertips. He’s got one attribute which he looks for when it comes to hiring new developers—a curious mind—and he’s certain it’s the key ingredient for producing successful software.

A team effort

Nagesh explains that the microservices platform which his team is working on is at the heart of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. “It’s a cluster of compute instances, running on Oracle Cloud, using Oracle Linux, Docker, and Kubernetes to provide a secure, reliable environment for hosting SaaS applications and providing value-added services to those applications,” he describes. “This open-source container management system is the industry-leading solution for cloud-native platforms.”

Guiding our Cloud Platform and Microservices teams, Nagesh is responsible for deliverables such as project planning, allocation of assignments, resolving blockages, and monitoring, as well as mentoring his team. He thinks it’s essential that his engineers understand how their career aspirations fit in with OCI’s overall strategy. “I provide mentorship to team members on how they can build their expertise and explain what they need to focus on in order to advance,” he shares. “I’m always keen to make sure my team’s personal goals align with overall OCI objectives.”

A process of discovery

It takes a creative professional who’s willing to learn and adapt to fit into the dynamic environment that OCI has created but, according to Nagesh, that’s what makes it the most exciting—and rewarding—team to be a part of.

“There is always this constant curiosity to learn about new technologies,” he says. “The learning never ends on this team and I think this definitely allows for more creativity which leads to writing better code, collaborating with your colleagues, and discussing design approaches. You also think in terms of user experience because development is not just about writing code for a feature or capability. There is such a sense of accomplishment when you see your product released and watch it have an impact on our customers’ working life.”

A never-ending education

Agility in the face of change is a core value at OCI. But no one is expected to know it all from the get-go. “From your very first day, you’ll receive onboarding training to ease you into your role,” Nagesh says. “There are blogs and resources for everything. You’ll also find our community sessions really insightful and useful.”

Encouraging employees to engage in life-long learning lies at the centre of OCI’s ethos and leaders work hard to ensure access to the latest thought leadership.

“Oracle has one of the best working cultures I have come across in my career,” Nagesh confirms. “What makes it stand out is the number of training sessions, knowledge sharing events, and countless resources they provide for us to learn and gain knowledge. We also have a big focus on diversity and inclusion in all aspects of our work life, which of course leads to even better results.”

Advice from an OCI expert

When asked to share some career advice, Nagesh refers back to a lesson that’s stayed with him throughout his working life. “It’s up to you if you want to be part of the crowd or you can put your hand up and stand out with your contributions.”

Finally, he leaves everyone with three key ingredients he believes makes for a great software developer. “Curiosity, creativity, and perseverance.” He urges everyone to focus on bringing these qualities to the surface—and to realize that it’s the ability to learn from mistakes that will reward you with future success.
