Oracle hackathon team from Saudi ArabiaAround the world, more than enough food is produced to feed the global population—yet more than 690 million people still go hungry every day. Food waste is just one of the contributing factors, with reports estimating that 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted unnecessarily every year.

An all-women team from Oracle Saudi Arabia sought to tackle this problem during our annual hackathon, MADHacks. This internal, virtual event brings people from around the world together to create innovative solutions that leverage the power of Oracle technology. With world hunger on the rise due to the global pandemic, this team of women decided to use AI to make food more accessible to people in need.

‘No for Poverty’

The solution is aptly named ‘Nee Vir Armoede’ which means ‘No for Poverty’ in Afrikaans. “This global platform connects institutions—food banks, societies, and restaurants with excess food—with people and charities who need these resources,” explains team member and AI and data science advisor, Aseel ADDawood. “The built-in intelligence system carries the matches, handles the logistics, and streamlines the steps to get excess food to people in need.”

Oracle technology is at the core of the game-changing solution which leverages our autonomous transaction processing database, blockchain, and more. The application was also built to run on Oracle Cloud, ensuring that it has the peak performance, security, and accessibility to be scaled globally. “With the help of emerging technologies, we truly believe this application will have a massive impact on the global hunger crisis,” emphasizes team member and solution engineer Zahra Alkaff.
