We get to meet a lot of candidates at Oracle, and each person is different. However, one thing stays the same: being well-prepared is key to landing the job. Too often, candidates fall short in interviews because they haven’t thought ahead.
You can give yourself the best possible chance in your next interview by following a few simple pointers.
Research the company and role
Take the time to get familiar with the company you’re interviewing for and be able to ask questions. You should understand the company, the job description, and how the job matches your skills.
Get the AI advantage
AI is a game-changer when it comes to job interview practice. Simulators like InterviewBuddy, Google Interview Warmup, and VMock Elevator Pitch help you prep for tough interviews with practice questions and feedback.
Know your interviewer
Ask your recruiter for details about the interviewer and interview format—is it a technical interview or behavioral interview for example? Check the dress code, and dress accordingly. This can be a big confidence-booster.
Think about your surroundings
If you’re having a video interview, make sure that your surroundings are tidy, well lit, and free from distractions. Check your hardware and software beforehand to make sure everything is working.
Be on time
In fact, get there early! Respect for other people’s time shows that you’re reliable. The same goes for virtual interviews—giving yourself some extra time can also help if there are any technical difficulties.
Pay attention
If the interview is on-site, observe the environment and team during the process. It can give you valuable insights on the workplace that may not come up otherwise.
Remember body language
Peter F Drucker said, “The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn’t said.” How you present yourself can affect your interviewer’s first impressions. With that in mind, try to:
- Keep good posture
- Phrase things clearly
- Use gestures when appropriate
- Make eye contact (or look at the camera, don’t stare though)
- Stay calm and be yourself
What to bring
Hiring managers like to see that candidates can think ahead. Every interview is different, but it’s best to come well-equipped. In person, bring a few copies of your resume, and always bring a notebook and pen.
After the interview
Nobody likes waiting to hear back. However, it’s important to give the recruiter space and time afterwards.
A day after the interview, feel free to send a thank you email. If you don’t hear back in a week, send a follow-up explaining that you’re eager to take the next step.
Stay positive
Don’t be disappointed if you don’t get past the interview stage. You can always ask the recruiter to share feedback on how things went. This can help you do better next time.
It’s important to stay positive—there are lots of other opportunities out there. Just keep networking and applying.
Oracle has plenty of roles to discover that can help you reach your potential, and you can see them all on our careers site right now.
Good luck!
