As a senior engineer, Parvathy Unnikrishnan leads the design, execution, and delivery of business solutions at Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). Since she started in her role over three years ago, a lot has changed but there’s one element of her working life that is constant—the collaborative culture she checks into day in, day out. How does Oracle achieve and maintain an atmosphere that makes everyone feel included and valued? Parvathy credits OCI’s executive leadership and obvious emphasis on equal opportunity which helps steer everyone towards a common goal.
Leadership that listens
Having spent over sixteen years navigating her way through the technology industry, Parvathy believes it’s the great leadership at Oracle that has enabled better, more researched, and creative ideas to flourish. “I think the informed decisions of the executive leadership to constantly evolve as an organisation driven by business strategy, gives the employees great opportunities and helps us align towards our company goals,” she begins.
She notices the efforts put in place to ensure the whole company moves together as a strong team in order to help customers solve their problems and, perhaps more importantly, the systems put in place to ensure there’s always someone on hand to offer support no matter what corner of the world you find yourself in. “Oracle has well defined team structures and collaboration tools to handle things from various geo locations across the globe, so that everyone in the team can have a good work-life balance,” she emphasizes.
Equal opportunity teams thrive
Being a woman in tech, Parvathy has never been made to feel any different to her male counterparts. Oracle recognizes the importance of diversity and inclusion and works hard to place it at the forefront of the company’s goals. Inclusive, diverse teams are the key factor in achieving the company’s mission of helping people see data in new ways.
Parvathy says, “It’s the people who create the culture and carve the thought process. If we as ‘people’ in tech, rather than ‘women’ in tech, pave way for a better environment which supports talent irrespective of the gender spectrum, that would immensely help us as an industry to move forward. Oracle has always given me equal opportunity to navigate and explore more exciting career prospects in the system.”
A continuous cycle of support
Working in an industry that evolves rapidly means the constant upgrading of skills and knowledge is a requirement for success. Parvathy insists that everyone should have an inquisitiveness to learn about the new technologies emerging and work with colleagues to always ensure teams are up to speed. “It’s an incredibly flexible modern industry, that’s powered by a good network of people at its core. Therefore, my suggestion would be to extend your support to the people around you and make it a better place to build a great career.”
Parvathy has some advice for anyone wondering how to contribute to the building of collaborative working cultures, “In my personal opinion, the conviction and trust of a good leadership is what helps to bring out the best from the employees. Our organisation has been great in this regard. This clear guidance has helped me to align myself to our goal during every task I am undertaking and also envision what it would take for me to move forward. Of course, I think good vibes are contagious, it definitely spreads out to your personal life too.”
