2022 marks my 27th year in IT security, and I still find myself surprised each year by the trends and conditions that are impacting the public sector, private sector, and consumers. Simply put, the world has continued to see dramatic changes through the first half of 2022.
We now see new IT modernization programs expand beyond the pandemic era to continue supporting flexible work forces and increases in digital transformation. Global financial pressures continue to impact consumers and businesses alike. Foreign conflicts are wreaking havoc on global markets, energy, manufacturing, and global supply chains, and they’re creating greater cyber-attack risks for western-aligned organizations. As a result, we continue to see a deflated work force and skills shortages in key areas of cyber-security and risk prevention.
For 2022, Oracle released a new ebook that takes a closer look at these challenges and explores the trends that are driving change. The ebook illustrates how IT and security leaders are using cloud services to reduce the complexity of securing IT infrastructure and improve cyber resilience and how Oracle security solutions can be leveraged to help address the ever-changing risk landscape for your region, industry, and organization.

Human risk continues to rise
Across all the trends in this report, the one commonality is human error. We continue to be impacted by limited staffing resources in cybersecurity or those that are simply not trained effectively. We see the results of this with under-patched environments that give rise to vulnerabilities or points of exposure that APT (Advanced Persistent Threats), ransomware, and other emerging threats can exploit. It’s also seen in misconfigurations of IT resources that create easy access to under-secured applications or cloud instances. And it’s apparent in the challenges organizations face in moving to the cloud when they don’t understand their responsibilities in securing workloads and thus, create points of exposure.
Leveraging the cloud to respond
With the broad adoption of cloud services being used to that promote flexibility and meet changing business demands, an equally adaptable security framework is needed. Strategic cloud providers can deliver a built-in (vs bolt on) security approach to allow for faster onboarding of users, applications and devices, automate the detection and response of threats, and provide on-going assurance of compliance and posture management across a hybrid cloud strategy.
The future of cloud is clear
Cloud delivered services became the savior of our pandemic IT pains by helping create new routes to market for business and services. This has allowed organizations to do more in a virtual model than they can in brick-and-mortar facilities. But increased virtualization also comes with new risks and threats, and this cannot be denied.
With today’s cloud infrastructures that use native, built-in protections managed by experienced and well-staffed cloud providers like Oracle, organizations have better security controls, flexibility, and resiliency that can help deliver a new generation of applications and services.
Cloud security trends for safeguarding your enterprise
