Oracle prides itself on listening to and addressing customer feedback. We've received many requests from customers of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure asking for larger block volume sizes and larger total block storage on compute instances. We've heard your feedback, and today we're happy to announce that the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Block Volumes service now supports up to 16 TB volumes, a significant increase from the prior limit of 2 TB per volume. Each compute instance can mount up to 32 volumes, resulting in a total of half a petabyte of block storage, up from the prior limit of 64 TB per instance. This increase will enable you to move storage-hungry workloads, such as large enterprise databases and Oracle E-Business Suite environments to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
The performance that you expect remains the same with these new limits. We continue to offer predictable, consistent, and linearly scaling performance regardless of the volume size, as we announced in our May 2017 service update (Announcing Block Volume Service Enhancements: Worry-Free Predictable Performance and Better Scale). For each block volume, we provide 60 IOPS/GB and 480 KBPS/GB throughput, up to a maximum of 25,000 IOPS and 320 MBPS throughput per volume.
This capability is available to all Oracle Cloud Infrastructure customers pursuant to their account's block storage capacity limits. By default, the customers will need an increase from the default limit in order to create volumes of up to 16 TB through the existing capacity request process. These larger volumes continue to be billed at the same rate of $0.0425 per GB-month, and support all of the same functionality, such as backup and restore, as prior volumes.
The Block Volumes service is designed for consistency, and following are key characteristics of the service:
|Metric or Feature||Block Volumes Service Characteristics|
|Flexibility, Volume Sizes||
Configurable: 50 GB to 16 TB (1 GB increments)
|Performance: IOPS/Volume||60 IOPS/GB, up to 25,000 IOPS|
|Performance: Throughput/Volume||480 KBPS/GB, up to 320 MBPS|
|Performance: Latency/Volume||Sub-millisecond latency|
|Performance: Per Compute Instance Limits||
32 attachments/instance, up to 0.5 PB
Up to 400K or more IOPS, near line rate throughout
|Cost per GB/month||4.25 cents! A single, simple option that delivers best-in-class performance and the consistency that you need.|
