To commemorate the 2024 International Girls in ICT Day, Oracle Academy sponsored an event organized by the Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (W.TEC) on May 15, 2024, in Lagos, Nigeria. W.TEC is a non-profit organization that provides technology education for women and girls in Nigeria. Themed “Leadership”, the impactful event gathered select 176 girls from 10 secondary schools in Lagos.

The International Girls in ICT Day is a day set aside annually by the UN to inspire a global movement and increase the representation of girls and women in technology. This is in line with Oracle Academy’s global mission of advancing technology education, skills, innovation, and diversity and inclusion. The event was designed to connect girls in STEM with successful women in ICT in order to help them mold their tech dreams to become reality by broadening their horizons and encouraging them to be more intentional in considering and pursuing careers in ICT.

The event featured the following activities:

• Career talks

• Leadership session for girls

• Break-out mentorship sessions

• Project presentations

• Prize presentations

• ICT-themed interactive fun games

Many thanks to Bekere Amassoma, Oracle Academy Program Manager, Sub Saharan Africa, and Oracle Women’s Leadership volunteers Kehinde Adewunmi, Technology Sales Manager, Oracle Nigeria, and Yinka Akinbamidele, Technology Sales Manager, Oracle Nigeria, for anchoring the leaderships session for the girls, facilitating breakout mentorship sessions, delivering insightful career talks and serving as guest judges at the project presentations.
