To commemorate the 2025 International Girls in ICT Day, the Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (W.TEC), in collaboration with Oracle Academy, hosted an inspiring event for 200 secondary school girls in Lagos. The event took place on May 15, 2025, at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Yaba, Lagos, with the theme: “Girls in ICT for Inclusive Digital Transformation.”
This initiative, organized as part of the W.TEC Academy program, aimed to spotlight the transformative potential of technology in the lives of girls. It also served as a platform to equip participants with relevant digital skills, foster innovation, and encourage the pursuit of technology careers among young women.
The event featured a rich lineup of activities including:
- Mentoring sessions with female technology professionals
- Group discussions and networking opportunities
- Tech project showcases by students from 10 secondary schools.
The keynote address was delivered by Bekere Amassoma, Oracle Academy Program Manager, Sub-Saharan Africa. She presented on ‘Inclusive Digital Transformation’ and highlighted the missed opportunities that result from the gender gap in tech — and encouraged girls to explore the vast possibilities in the ICT field. Her presentation also touched on the digital gender divide: global and local context, barriers facing high school girls in Nigeria, case studies of organizations accelerating change in Nigeria, international best practices, and an action plan for inclusive digital transformation. “We need your voices, your creativity, and your ideas to shape a better digital future,” she urged.
A question and answer segment included a robust technical session led a member of W.TEC’s Advisory Board, focused on artificial intelligence in education. She emphasized the responsible use of AI and encouraged the girls to embrace the technology as a powerful tool for learning and innovation.
Participants from each of the participating schools presented tech projects, including websites and mobile apps, developed during their HTML and CSS training sessions. These presentations demonstrated the girls’ grasp of digital tools and their creativity in problem-solving through technology. Each winning team received prizes for their excellence in innovation and presentation.
The 2025 International Girls in ICT Day celebration by W.TEC and Oracle Academy was a resounding success. It served as a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusive digital transformation and the need to foster participation of girls in ICT from an early age.
