To foster innovation and experiential learning among aspiring technology enthusiasts, Oracle Academy and Aditya Academy collaborated to host a SQL Competition, an engaging five-day coding challenge in India. Held from March 11–16, 2026, the initiative brought together around 1,500 students who registered for the competition, aimed at strengthening students’ practical database management expertise and analytical problem-solving skills through the application of Structured Query Language (SQL).

The challenge

The competition was conducted across four progressive levels, each designed with increasing complexity and a more rigorous evaluation framework. Participants worked with industry-relevant datasets inspired by real-world domains such as education, sales, human resources, inventory management, and finance. The challenge datasets included multiple interrelated tables with primary and foreign keys, along with realistic data volumes, ensuring consistency, fairness, and strong alignment with real-world industry practices.

The competition was designed to strengthen students’ practical and analytical expertise in SQL by immersing them in real-world database scenarios and progressively challenging problem-solving exercises. The competition:

  • Enhanced hands-on SQL proficiency aligned with industry-oriented tasks and applications.
  • Developed students’ ability to write accurate, optimized, and efficient SQL queries.
  • Prepared participants for technical interviews and database-centric career opportunities.
  • Fostered collaboration, participation, and a spirit of competitive learning among students

Competition highlights

The competition commenced with an online multiple-choice question assessment focused on SQL fundamentals. Out of 1,500 registered participants, 831 students qualified for the second round. The subsequent second and third rounds emphasized practical SQL query-solving and advanced database problem-solving skills, from which 26 students advanced to the final stage.

The final round consisted of an interview and project presentation evaluated by faculty members and advisors, where finalists showcased their projects and demonstrated their technical expertise before the panel. Based on their overall performance across all rounds, the top 20 students were selected and recognized with awards.

Prerna Sinha, Principal Member of Technical Staff, Development Operations, Oracle, and Sonali Mittal, Principal Devops Engineer, Oracle, graced the event as keynote speakers during the inauguration. Their extensive experience brought significant insight and value.

Winners

After intense competition, three students emerged triumphant:

First place: Balangu Charan

Second place: J S R Vinayaka Gopala Krishna Chavali

Third place: Palanki Kanaka Ratna Mithra
