In a rapidly evolving technology landscape, staying relevant requires more than technical skills: it requires curiosity, adaptability, and continuous learning. In a new Oracle Academy Tech Chat podcast, Rob Lockard, a retired Oracle ACE Director with over 40 years of experience in IT, shares powerful insights on building a resilient and successful career.

He notes: “The moment you lose your curiosity, your career has ended.” It is a strong statement, but one grounded in experience.

Rather than focusing solely on keeping up with every new trend, Rob emphasizes something more fundamental: the importance of maintaining a genuine interest in learning. Throughout his career, this mindset enabled him to adapt, take on new challenges, and approach problems from different angles.

Rather than chasing every new trend or mastering every new tool, Rob describes the need for a much simpler (and more uncomfortable) truth: Staying relevant isn’t about knowing everything. It’s about constantly wanting to learn more.

That mindset led him to:

  • reinvent himself multiple times in his career
  • step into things at which he initially thought he’d fail
  • and even use completely unrelated hobbies to become better at solving problems

What stands out is that this was not driven by major shifts alone, but by consistent, intentional actions—making time to explore new topics, stepping outside familiar areas, and applying what he learned in practice.

Throughout his career, Rob did not rely on a fixed plan. Instead, he continuously adjusted his direction—much like landing an aircraft. As a pilot, he described how a successful landing is not about a single perfect move, but about making constant small corrections. He approaches career development in the same way: observing, adjusting, and staying responsive to change.

He also makes another important point: curiosity isn’t passive. He treats it like a daily discipline: something you train for, not something you wait for. And in a world where AI is rapidly changing how we work, that might be the real competitive edge.

If you’ve ever wondered:

  • how to stay relevant in tech long-term
  • whether AI will replace or amplify your career
  • or how to keep growing when things feel… comfortable

This conversation is worth your time.
