On April 14, 2025, The Digital Transformation Summit, held at the Strathmore Business School Auditorium at Strathmore University, Kenya, brought together academic leaders, policymakers and technology experts to explore how digital technologies are reshaping the higher education landscape in Africa. The event was co-hosted with the Technical University of Kenya (TU-K) and Strathmore University as part of the DigitAfrica project: a three-year initiative co-funded by the European Union to build the digital capacity of eight African universities.
Summit featured compelling keynote addresses, engaging interactive discussions, and valuable networking opportunities during tea and lunch breaks. A major highlight of the day was a panel discussion on the “Impact of digital transformation on higher education, with a focus on African universities,” in which Lorna Juma, Oracle Academy Program Manager, Africa, participated.
This provided a platform to share insights on the urgent need for African universities to embrace digital transformation — not only as a response to global trends but as a proactive strategy for increasing access, enhancing teaching and learning experiences, and aligning graduates with the needs of a digitally driven economy.
The discussion also covered topics such as bridging the digital divide, investing in educator training, and enabling innovation ecosystems across campuses. Participants emphasized that for transformation to be effective, it must be inclusive, context-aware, and driven by collaboration between academia, industry, and development partners.
The summit provided an important platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and partnership-building among institutions committed to reimagining higher education in the digital age.
