New SPARC & Solaris Platform Roadmap

By: Glynn Foster | Product Manager

As a direct response to customer requests, we're planning to deliver future Oracle Solaris features and functionality through dot releases instead of more disruptive releases that may have undergone significant test, re-certification and qualification. As you've probably seen from our lifetime support policy, we're moving towards a continuous delivery model for Oracle Solaris, and we've just recently pushed out a new version of our Oracle SPARC and Solaris Platform Roadmap.

Check out the Oracle SPARC and Solaris Platform Roadmap.

Solaris 12 as a release is no longer being considered. Instead, we are moving the Solaris release cadence to operate under a continuous delivery model based on the Solaris 11 release train. The work that you may have seen or heard about in Solaris 12 will merge back into the Solaris 11 train. We have SRU monthly updates for non-disruptive changes, and future dot releases - all of which won't require additional qualification/certification for ISVs.

Does this means that no more HW will be sold by oracle after the S7?

  • Glynn Monday, February 6, 2017

We will continue to produce SPARC and x86 based hardware, and Solaris will be supported on those platforms.

We've done a bunch of work related to analytics, lifecycle management, security and many other parts of the operating system. We don't typically give exact dates on when those things will land in Solaris, but you'll just have to take my word for it that they're extremely beneficial and put Solaris further ahead in overall terms of management and solving direct customer problems.
