Startups and scale-ups often reach a point where they need to reconsider their applications’ data platform to effectively scale. These organizations’ initial platform typically allows them to rapidly get going and cope with unpredictable user base growth and volatile demand. However, once the product-market fit has been established and growth has reached a tipping point, it may no longer be the best choice. Signs that it’s time to re-platform may include performance issues, the inability to scale to meet customer demands or onboard new customers, time-consuming processes diverting time/resources away from the core business, runaway operating costs, downtime, and the need to improve security.
MySQL HeatWave is the only cloud database service that combines transactions, analytics, and machine learning services into one MySQL Database, delivering real-time, secure analytics without the complexity, latency, and cost of extract, transform, and load (ETL) duplication. MySQL HeatWave is 6.5X faster than Amazon Redshift at half the cost, 7X faster than Snowflake at one-fifth the cost, and 1,400X faster than Amazon Aurora at half the cost. It’s available on OCI, AWS, and Azure.
Numerous fast-growing, cloud-native organizations have selected MySQL HeatWave as their data platform to effectively overcome their growing pains. See how four of them improved performance, scalability, security, and productivity while reducing costs by migrating to MySQL HeatWave.
Cloud-native startups scale with MySQL HeatWave
Bionime modernizes data and analytics with MySQL HeatWave on AWS
Bionime’s vision is to provide diabetes patients with peace of mind through self-monitoring blood glucose systems that help them accurately manage and control their health.
The medical device manufacturer’s analytics service built on Amazon RDS was not performing for the large amount of data needed to provide accurate and up-to-date glucose monitoring to patients. Bionime sought a faster data platform that would support its existing database technologies.
With MySQL HeatWave on AWS, Bionime has seen gains of 50X faster resolution of complex queries compared to Amazon RDS. In addition, it eliminated the need for a separate analytics database and ETL processes. MySQL HeatWave improved scalability, supporting more data with less administration while generating insights based on real-time analytics to accelerate application development.
MySQL HeatWave is helping Bionime to launch its next-generation product, Continuous Glucose Monitoring, with more accurate, real-time reporting to improve patient’s lives.
“MySQL HeatWave on AWS has 50X faster complex queries compared to AWS RDS that provide us real-time insights to accelerate application development and help us improve patients’ lives.”

Pinnacle handles 1 billion daily transactions on their SMS Gateway application with MySQL HeatWave on OCI
Pinnacle Teleservices, which offers an array of services to improve clients’ communications and their customers’ engagement, was running two different versions of MySQL Community Edition hosted by Digital Ocean to handle up to 300 million daily transactions. It left the company struggling to quickly provision resources to support its SMS Gateway application at peak times. This led Pinnacle to look for a cloud-based database platform that would deliver scalability, improve operational excellence, and support its most resource-intensive workloads and applications.
Pinnacle ran a proof of concept comparing different cloud providers, including Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). The company selected MySQL HeatWave running on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). By migrating its database workloads to MySQL HeatWave, Pinnacle consolidated resource-intensive workloads on a single database cloud platform, with 40% better performance than Amazon Redshift. As a result, the company’s SMS Gateway application improved scalability by more than 3X, managing up to 1 billion daily transactions.
Pinnacle also eliminated the time and effort of ETL processes as MySQL HeatWave runs both online transaction processing and analytical workloads. The company now delivers real-time analytics directly from MySQL HeatWave—without needing to index data beforehand and move it to a separate analytics database.
With the powerful encryption available with MySQL HeatWave, Pinnacle secures the confidential data and personally identifiable information held in its database, meeting all relevant domestic and international data privacy and data protection laws.
“MySQL HeatWave running on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure has been instrumental for creating optimum performance and scalability for our business operations. Not only has the solution brought reliability, but also cost savings, much needed for any business.”
—Dhiraj Rokade, Assistant General Manager, Information Technology, Pinnacle Teleservices
Estuda.com increases query responses by 300X with MySQL HeatWave on OCI
Estuda.com is a platform that aims to prepare students in Brazil for higher education institutions. It serves both the B2C and B2B segments: In B2C, students take mock exams and have their performances evaluated in real time; in B2B, administrators and teachers can access a database of questions for use in creating tests. The ed-tech company automates the entire exam process, including offline and online exercises and simulations, feedback, and assessments.
Estuda initially used Amazon RDS and over time adopted Google BigQuery. Estuda’s users expect fast speeds, but the company’s rapid growth hampered its ability to deliver. If a student could not see a feedback report in 30 seconds, the page would be closed, and the transaction lost. The critical challenge for Estuda was to find a cloud-based database that was fast, cost-effective, and effortlessly scalable.
Moving to MySQL Heatwave produced a staggering 300X faster response time for complex queries compared to BigQuery. OCI’s more predictable flat fee pricing model compared to GCP enabled Estuda to reduce costs by 85%. Additionally, MySQL Heatwave eliminates the need to ETL the data from a transactional database to a separate analytics database, saving the company more time and costs.
The superior query speed, on-demand scalability, and lower costs of MySQL HeatWave enabled Estuda to quickly expand its business to impact more students.
“We have 3 million students a month on our platform, and every user who accesses estuda.com has to see their assessment report in real-time. MySQL HeatWave on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure delivers the high query performance and elasticity that we require, at predictable low costs.”
—Vitor Pereira de Freitas, Cofounder and Chief Technical Officer, Estuda.com
Licitapyme migrates from AWS to MySQL HeatWave on OCI
Licitapyme operates a leading contract bidding platform for small- and medium-sized enterprises. It provides customers with current and past tender information downloaded daily from the Chilean government procurement sites. Licitapyme was running its marketplace on AWS, using Amazon Aurora and Amazon Redshift, but was dissatisfied with costs, separate OLTP and OLAP systems, high data center latency, and performance.
Licitapyme migrated to MySQL HeatWave on OCI, eliminating the need for complex ETL between Amazon Aurora and Amazon Redshift. With the assistance of Oracle’s MySQL team, Licitapyme completed the migration in only one day.
The company doubled the speed at which it makes tender and contract information available. Single queries now run 5X faster than with Amazon Aurora and 2.5X faster than with Amazon Redshift. Customer satisfaction has risen as pages load up to 3X faster with MySQL HeatWave.
In addition to reducing database costs, Licitapyme reduced compute costs by 74% on OCI vs Amazon EC2.
MySQL HeatWave’s higher performance and the lower latency of the Oracle Cloud data center in Chile have given Licitapyme a springboard to expand and scale to other countries in Latin America.
