In 2023, FOSSASIA returned as a physical event after 2 years of being virtual. With this comeback, the MySQL team was again part of the 2023 edition with MySQL keynote, several technical sessions and the MysQL booth.

Despite the fact that only 200 participants turned out to be from the initially announced 1000 expected participants, the conference was well attended by the open source communities as participants such as GrafanaLab, OpenEuler, OpenRobotic, Microsoft and others. The vast majority of participants were students and academicians.

MySQL had 6 speaking slots as announced before (2 of them were remote ones).

Our participation at FOSSASIA was started with the MySQL keynote on the topic “State of Dolphin”, which was delivered by Sandeep Angresh, the Senior Director – MySQL Software Sales, Channels & Alliances, Japan & Asia Pacific on the first day morning.

We received very valuable feedback and set of questions from the attendees at the physical technical session and great attendance of our keynote. The majority of questions was about MySQL HeatWave when people were interested in how easy is to develop apps to use HeatWave AutoML or whether the MySQL HeatWave is and OS.

However it was really great to meet all the people during FOSSASIA physically again and have a chance to run multiple technical discussions and debate also at our booth.

It was great to see that there were also non-Oracle presenters who presented MySQL and discussion went around among attendees, which is an amazing movement!

During the same week, another event took place outside of FOSSASIA, two days before FOSSASIA officially started, on April 11, 2023, Oracle Academy hosted a Java-focused event for our faculty members in Singapore at members National University of Singapore (NUS) and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD).

Heather VanCura, Oracle Senior Director at Oracle and lead of the MySQL Community team presented a session on MySQL and How You Can Use It at the Student Database Industry Day. Students enjoyed hearing about how MySQL is used and how they could use it in their careers. While in Singapore, Heather also hosted a Faculty Day at the Oracle Singapore office in her role as Chair of the Java Community Process (JCP) program, which has responsibility for the development of Java technology standard specifications. More details on the Faculty Day Blog.
