As the tech industry continues to evolve faster and faster, it’s more important than ever for the next generation of innovators to build experience and skills to succeed. The Oracle Internship Program provides students and recent graduates with a unique opportunity to kick-start their careers—and networks—in tech. Here, we’ll take a look back at the experiences of interns past and present, hear from those who have been through the program, and explore what new interns can expect from this exciting and rewarding experience.
Standing out from the crowd
As far as Database Product Manager, Kamryn Vinson is concerned, “You need to have a passion for your future career and demonstrate the qualities of professionalism” to get the best possible start. Kamryn, who joined Oracle as an intern herself after graduating from Georgia Southern University in 2020, emphasizes the importance of enthusiasm, teamworking capabilities, and a willingness to learn. She also highlights the value of prioritization, meeting deadlines, and connecting with colleagues and mentors.
Kamryn’s advice is echoed by Elayne Blancas, a former Oracle intern, who says, “Being an Oracle intern is another testament to my ability to thrive in the face of adversity. As a first-generation graduate, I’ve been able to demonstrate that perseverance, discipline, and virtue are critical to bringing any dream to life.” Elayne’s experience at Oracle taught her the importance of taking initiative, seeking out additional opportunities, and leveraging her skills and abilities to exceed expectations.
Gearing up for internship success
For new interns, the experience can be both thrilling and daunting. Tanya Gupta, another former Oracle intern, now a member of technical staff, recalls, “My mentor effortlessly helped me navigate through it, told me where to look for help, and was a pillar of support when I felt hesitant trying out things for the first time.” Her experience highlights the importance of having a supportive team and mentor, as well as the value of hands-on learning and applying concepts to real-world projects.
Kassandra Montemayor, another former Oracle intern turned product manager, emphasizes the importance of embracing the unexpected and being open to new experiences and learning opportunities. She says, “There are so many different career paths within Oracle that I didn’t know existed, so much material from which to learn and grow. I can’t believe my life goals are coming to fruition.”
Finding your calling
Jose Hernandez, a veteran and former Oracle intern, found his true calling in cloud development during his internship. He credits the experience with giving him clarity about his future and says, “Oracle could be one of the best decisions you can make, from the friendly and welcoming culture across the company, to being able to work on unique projects, and just an overall good experience.” Jose’s advice to new interns is to believe in themselves and take advantage of the type of resources and opportunities available to Oracle employees.
Amia Combs spent three summers at Oracle and also emphasizes the importance of believing in oneself. She says, “Coming in with imposter syndrome is normal for any intern, but I had to understand that I was in my position at Oracle for a reason. They chose me, so I need to show them exactly why I was the chosen one.” Amia’s experience taught her the value of having a strong support system, taking risks, and being open to new opportunities and challenges.
Community and growth
Cosmo Trikes overcame imposter syndrome and a life-changing accident during his internship and highlights the importance of community and relationship-building. He says, “Throughout the day I would chat with other interns, attend intern events, get involved with other groups inside Oracle, join team meetings asking lots of questions, and meet with my manager to learn more about our team and company.” Cosmo’s experience demonstrates the value of being proactive, seeking out opportunities, and building connections with colleagues and mentors during an internship.
Guinevere Swiencicki, meanwhile, doubles down on the importance of community and support. She says, “Oracle supported each of us by listening to interns’ needs and amplifying our voices. Every intern was given a mentor to guide them, a team of fellow interns to build connections, and opportunities to grow professionally and learn new skills.” Guinevere’s experience highlights the value of having a supportive and inclusive environment, as well as the importance of ongoing learning and development.
Saying yes to opportunities
Layla Massey used her time with us to get out of her comfort zone and take on new challenges. “Are you scared of public speaking? Say yes to any and every public speaking opportunity that comes your way!” she says.
“Are you looking to challenge your UI/UX design skills? Ask to create those mockups. I said yes to every opportunity, especially if it brought me out of my comfort zone. I believe that’s when the best growth happens.” Her experience demonstrates the value of being proactive, taking risks, and seeking out new challenges and opportunities.
