Why do sales development representatives matter?

Brody Whalen joined Oracle as an SDR in 2023 and was promoted to account management in 2024. When describing the impact SDR have within the sales team he said, “every big deal that gets done, has to start somewhere, and that’s usually with SDRs.”

Although SDR is an entry level role, each SDR is a key partner in the sales organization and handles generating and qualifying leads. In short, SDRs are the catalysts for our biggest deals, using their prospecting and selling skills to find and engage potential customers.

SDR go beyond sales and are connected to the business and tech sides of Oracle which will develop a newcomer’s knowledge of both. SDR execute our sales strategy and gain the experience and exposure necessary to form the foundation for long-term sales success.

  1. Build the foundations

Things move fast, but with purpose. We equip you with consultative selling skills and a deep understanding of our solutions. You’ll also develop your industry knowledge and sales methodology, which makes sure you have the credibility to engage with decision-makers confidently.

  1. Unleash opportunities

The main part of the job is building a robust sales pipeline. This involves cold calling, social selling, and prospecting to identify and engage potential customers. You’ll qualify and promote leads, setting defined next steps for the Oracle sales team to pursue. This part requires tenacity, critical thinking, and a strong work ethic.

  1. Collaborate and strategize

Collaboration is perhaps the most important part. You’ll work closely with the sales team, contributing to go-to-market strategies and demand generation activities. This includes finding target customers, developing tailored value propositions, and coordinating efforts to maximize impact. The best part? “You get to talk to a lot of interesting people,” Maddie Pallanez, one of our NetSuite SDRs shares.

  1. Champion accuracy

Lastly, a lead is only as good as its research. Attention to detail is crucial, as you will be responsible for ensuring all data is accurate and updated in Oracle’s CRM applications. This includes tracking interactions, qualifying leads, and providing insights to the sales team.
