Jacqueline Zendejo was in the middle of one life’s biggest transitions when she found her calling at Oracle.

Born and raised in Texas, Jacqueline joined the United States Navy in 2016 as a cryptologic technician. Four years later, after two deployments in signals intelligence, it was time for an honorable discharge and a new challenge.

“The opportunity to start in a different career field and learn new skills, as well as the opportunity to relocate was exciting,” she shares.

Fresh opportunities

Thanks to her military experience and a referral from an Oracle employee, she now works with us as a data center technician in Salt Lake City, Utah at one of our new data centers helping meet the growing demand for our AI and cloud services.

She was first drawn to Oracle by the opportunity to develop new skills and embark on a fresh career path. The recruitment process was seamless, and she felt prepared for the in-depth interviews ahead.

“The recruitment process flowed well,” Jacqueline explains. “From the referral to what to expect on the following steps in the hiring process. I felt prepared and confident when it came to doing the multiple hour-long interviews.”

Valuing Veterans

Oracle values the unique experience and skills that Veterans bring. And we understand that there aren’t neat comparisons between job titles in the military and corporate worlds. That’s why we foster a culture of inclusion that empowers our people to transform their careers and the world their way.

It’s something Jacqueline noticed right away. “I liked that a lot of the managers I spoke to made me feel confident even though I had no previous experience or skills specific to the position I was applying to,” she shares.

Oracle’s Military Affiliated Veteran Employee Network and our dedicated career pathways like Sales for Veterans and the Oracle Veteran Internship Program for transitioning Veterans help cut through the noise to real career results.

A chance to connect

Jacqueline recognizes the value of such initiatives, which foster a sense of inclusivity and community for Veterans transitioning to civilian life. These groups provide a valuable platform to connect with fellow Veterans.

“I think it is an amazing opportunity and I appreciate the inclusivity Oracle has for Veterans whose positions do not directly transfer over to civilian life. These groups also give a chance to connect with other Veterans or active-duty members within the community.”

The chance to engage with like-minded individuals is testament to Oracle’s commitment to Veterans—along with our dedicated talent network for fresh opportunities. As a professional with military experience, Jacqueline finds herself in high demand and working at an Oracle data center keeps her engaged thanks to the fast-paced environment.

“It’s given me the opportunity to work in a tight-knit team like I’m use to in the military and in a work environment where we are focused on customers and their specific confidential needs,” she explains. “It’s a huge influence on what positions I can apply to and where I can go if I choose to relocate in the future.”

Rewarding challenges

Her duties involve staying up to date with the latest developments through chats, emails, and collaboration tools. It all adds up to keep her connected with her organization and colleagues. Her responsibilities also adapt to the needs of the data center, keeping each day unique.

The dynamic nature of the work keeps her engaged as she tackles a constant stream of rewarding challenges. “There’s always something to do during the day including receiving racks, escorting, and break-fix issues so depending on the staffing, my duties change day-to-day,” she adds.

Culture matters here and when she thinks of her team, she describes a cohesive unit that works seamlessly together, drawing strength from the diverse skills of its members.

Culture of respect

Collaboration and support are woven into the fabric of life at Oracle. Jacqueline highlights the inclusivity she sees daily, emphasizing how the company fosters an environment where everyone feels welcomed.

“I notice it with my team members, we’re all from different backgrounds, different characters, and points of views. Many from different places around the country.”

She points out that this inclusive mindset is clear in the way her team is composed of individuals from varied backgrounds, with different perspectives and origins. According to Jacqueline, Oracle’s inclusivity shines through its ability to bring people together and create a unified work family, bringing out the best in everyone.

“Everyone has different skills and we either work together or individually, depending on the projects. There’s good morale, food is provided for everyone when where there are deadlines involved and we work extra hours. We converse and ask each other about our interests outside of work. It’s a good time!”

Women thrive

It’s clear that Jacqueline’s experiences here have been positive, and she appreciates the company’s culture of unity and acceptance, which seems to enhance the workplace experience. It’s been a refreshing change. When Jacqueline first joined the tech sector, she noticed one thing right away: the absence of women.

“I was the only woman on my team for the first half of my career, we came in and were all expected to do the same job.”

Here, Jacqueline has seen a workplace where equality is paramount, and respect is a given. It’s helped her feel valued and recognized as an individual

It also underlines Oracle’s commitment to an inclusive tech workplace, where meritocracy and equity prevails. It’s encouraging to hear her perspective on how Oracle stands out in an industry that has historically posed challenges for women.

“It is different at Oracle; everyone is treated equally. There hasn’t been any special treatment, or sexism since I have worked for Oracle. Not once,” she says.

Personal work style

She’s also noticed some key advantages to working in a data center that align with her own motivations and work style. The ability to work at her own pace and motivate herself intrinsically is a significant benefit. As is the flexibility to choose between working independently or on a team.

I personally think the advantages of working at an Oracle data center is the self-motivated, self-paced work. I like being able to choose to work on my own or as a team. I also like to be challenged, and working on these machines, some creativity is involved which I enjoy.”

“I come into the office knowing I’m going to be challenged, but the outcome is always rewarding.”

Fulfillment

When it comes to career advice, Jacqueline encourages people to consider Oracle’s dynamic and ever-evolving work environment. She emphasizes the many opportunities for growth and learning, even for seasoned professionals as a huge bonus.

It’s clear that Jacqueline finds fulfillment in her work and enjoys the rewards that come with a fast-paced, ever-changing role. She’s also quick to recommend this career to others.

If you’re willing to learn and like to be challenged, even without the technical skills, working as a data center technician for Oracle is very rewarding.”
