Engineers do their best work at Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure is searching for hands-on engineers who are keen to make their mark on the future of the cloud. We caught up with Praseetha, Principal Member of Technical Staff, to get some insight into what life is like in her ground-breaking team. So let’s get straight to it—why did she join Cloud Infrastructure?

“Well, I joined Oracle as a fresher ten years ago. It’s been a glorious journey from being mentored to being a mentor. I’m currently part of the Cloud Infrastructure team that’s working on Data Integration. Given that data plays such a vital role in today’s world, I find my work is highly relevant.”

Praseetha gives a simple explanation of what Data Integration is all about. “We’re building cloud services that enable customers to seamlessly retrieve and combine data from multiple sources and turn it into valuable information,” she explains. “This organized data can be further sliced and diced into meaningful reports which can help customers get a better picture of their operations, improve their business, win more customers, and eventually earn more profit.  In short, my work translates into giving customers a big competitive advantage.”

What’s her average working week like? “There’s literally never a dull day. I work with a dynamic and enthusiastic team that encourage me to think outside the box and come up with new ideas. My work day is peppered with brainstorming sessions, design discussions, debugging, code reviews, stand up meetings, and plenty of learning. You’ll usually find me working with powerful tools and collaborating with some of the smartest people I’ve ever met.”

When asked what inspires her in her role, Praseetha talks a lot about the team-oriented culture. “Although different services are owned by different people, we have this oneness as a group; we share a collective responsibility. It really shines through in our knowledge sharing. It’s probably my biggest driving force,” she reveals. “Our individual achievements are also recognized in the form of awards which motivates us even further.”

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure provides a working environment that’s designed to help engineers do their best work. “This is a place that encourages developers to innovate and be creative,” Praseetha observes. “There are no hierarchies here. Anyone can propose the next big idea. It’s the complete learning experience.”

One of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure’s big selling points is that everyone subscribes to the same core values. “We have a set of engineering values that our whole organization believes in,” Praseetha emphasises. “One of the values that I appreciate the most is ‘nail the fundamentals.’ We really stick to it and it’s helped us navigate many a complex scenario,” she continues. “I also love how adaptable our team is and seeing how well we embrace change. That’s another one of our values.”

This adaptability can be clearly seen when you look at the diverse technologies that Praseetha’s team use on a daily basis. “We work on React, Java, Python, Go, and big data technologies like Spark, Docker, Kubernetes, Elastic Search, and Lumberjack. That’s just a small sample,” she remarks.

Praseetha actually says that flexibility is something that defines her team in more ways than one. “We’re flexible in the way we work but also in the way we live. I have the freedom to choose my own working hours and basically design my working week,” she reveals.

“In terms of productivity, it’s definitely the right attitude to have. We’re all highly motivated. We have lots of team activities and outings to celebrate successful product releases which keeps our spirits high too.”

Does she have any career advice? “Learning is a continuous process. Not every technology concept is going to be a cake-walk, and some of the best ideas will take persistence. Always question the unknown—and keep reminding yourself that growth begins at the end of your comfort zone.”
