At Oracle we recognize the power in thinking differently and bringing together individuals from all walks of life. It’s our differences that allow us to create a brighter future. That’s why we work hard to open opportunities to everyone on an equal playing field. Nicole James chose to lead at Oracle because of the chances afforded to her by supportive mentors – learn why she thinks you should follow in her footsteps.
Inclusion is the key to technological advancement
When asked what brought Nicole to Oracle, she answered without hesitation. Our clear drive towards an inclusive workforce of talented minds and consistent innovation made the move a no-brainer for her. “Two things really attracted me to Oracle. Their journey to bring emerging technology to the workplace and their path to digital transformation that looks at different solutions, especially from a customer experience service perspective.” Nicole continued by saying, “I’m very excited to be able to contribute to those emerging technologies and deliver solutions to customers.” Scaling in digital innovation isn’t the only attribute that caught Nicole’s eye. Our diversity policies and focus on togetherness were a big factor in her choosing to work with us.
“It’s very important for us to look at what everyone
can bring to the table.”
Become the leader you never had
When it comes to taking charge, Oracle works to create an environment that champions and encourages everyone to reach new heights. A workspace Nicole found her style and approach to leadership by searching for what she felt was lacking on her journey to the top. She remembers, “I would say that there have been multiple leaders who have shown me different aspects of their styles that I have tried to adopt in my own leadership. “I strive to become the one leader that I never had. For me that’s drawing on three core aspects; curiosity, being able to listen and asking the right questions.” On top of those qualities, Nicole urges aspiring leaders to keep their integrity on the way up. Displaying a sense of genuineness and being trustworthy got her further than she could’ve imagined.
Creating the future – what does it really mean?
For Nicole, it means anticipating the needs of your customer, not only today but tomorrow and in five months time. She says you have to constantly be ten steps ahead if you really want to achieve change. Nicole shares, “It’s almost like playing chess with different solutions in the marketplace. You have to understand where they’re taking their business what their needs will be three to five years from now. “I’m always looking for new technologies, new ways of doing things to fuel innovation. You also need to take risks. If you want to create the future of technology, you can’t play it safe.” She reminds everyone there’s two choices; you can either be someone who follows the crowd or be someone who swings for the fences and leaves a true mark on change.
Knowing your stuff helps to navigate the industry
In her 20 plus years of software experience, Nicole – a woman of colour – has had her fair dealing of tough situations. She credits Oracle for championing its focus on inclusion and shares how she’s often felt underappreciated in the technology industry.
She offers some advice to women everywhere wanting to make a career for themselves in the world of technology.
“I’m always well prepared. To show up as your best self it’s vital to do the research, have all your data points ready, and know what you’re talking about when you’re called to the table. It’ll allow you to trust yourself and give you confidence to use your voice in conversation.”
