Senior Principal Consultant Amol Datir couldn’t believe his luck when he received an email accepting his application to join Oracle Financial Services Consulting, fifteen years ago. Spending his youth searching for the perfect challenge, he had his heart set on working for a technology leader, and since landing a seat at the table, he’s grown exponentially, both personally and professionally, and enjoyed every step of the journey. With so many years under his belt, he’s quite the expert on the way of life at Oracle—let’s listen to his words of wisdom!
What is your role within Oracle Financial Services Consulting (OFSC) and how does it add value to the company?
I am an integration expert along with a good team leader. Irrespective of languages or technologies, I always make systems that communicate among themselves to provide proper solutions to customers. I’ve had the opportunity to play multiple roles in my career and have worked on many implementation projects in the banking sector as technical lead and integration specialist. At Oracle, I am always motivated to explore new technologies using different training courses. These days, I am fortunate enough to get opportunities in management, which is a new arena that I am working in.
Tell us about the innovative work OFSC is doing. How is it making an impact on peoples’ lives?
Oracle has a very open and dynamic work culture, which essentially comes with a more collaborative and self-motivated environment, autonomy, openness of communication, and flexibility. It results in the perfect blend of work and family life balance.
How did you come to specialize in this area and why are you passionate about it?
Whilst I have expertise in the banking domain, I am a technical person who integrates multiple systems. I am passionate about it because I get the chance to learn features related to different systems technically and functionally.
I enjoy my role very much since I like taking challenges. It gives me complete satisfaction and peace of mind. It requires multi-tasking, collaborating with different members, thinking on your feet, and designing solutions that work for our customers. This role allows me to hone my leadership skills and management skills while supporting and contributing to the success of my team. Every day, I look forward to getting to work simply because I know I’ll have a new challenge to solve. I enjoy working on new technologies where I can explore and learn new things on my own. I believe this is the perfect place to grow both professionally and personally.
How has Oracle evolved in the 15 years you have been here?
Oracle is not only a database company. It has evolved and spread its wings to create a big umbrella of products and services. It’s like one big shopping mall, which gives solutions to all types of customers.
What do you think distinguishes Oracle from competitors in your industry?
Oracle offers the choice and flexibility to meet customers’ business requirements. It has an exhaustive list of products, services, and cloud services.
At Oracle, there’s a lot of room for individual growth and learning. There’s a diverse career landscape. The most important thing is that it demands that you stay abreast of the advancements in technology. You need to evaluate your skills continuously and see how you can improve them. Oracle gives priority to employees, the health of their families, and their personal lives.
Your team mentions that diversity and inclusion is a priority. Do you see this in your day-to-day? Why do you think diversity is important?
Yes, we’re focusing on diversity in a big way. Not only do diverse teams give you more exposure to how to communicate with different colleagues, an inclusive culture also empowers you to put forth your own ideas and solutions, which in turn encourages employees to constantly improve and give their best efforts.
Why should professionals join your team?
There are many reasons, but a few of the important ones are:
- Working with extremely smart, equally nice, and collaborative people, as well as a group of down-to-earth leaders who get stuff done and always support team members.
- Working on challenging and interesting problems, and striving to do the right thing, the right way, with continuous improvement.
- Constant learning, teaching, and mentoring each other to grow together.
- Working closely with your manager to grow your brand and skills.
Any career advice to share?
The best career or job is the one in which you’re using the skills you enjoy and understanding that not every job needs to address all of your passions. Use every new position as an opportunity to learn something and keep an open mind; you may find that you really enjoy something you never imagined before.
For me the key is this—15 years later I wake up and still look at every day with pride and joy, exactly as if it was my first day starting at Oracle.
