AI agents and agentic workflows are generating a lot of buzz—so much that it’s often hard to separate fact from fiction. While we can’t talk about what others are doing or speak for the industry as a whole, we can share our strategy. It will show you how we’re thinking about the role of AI agents in Oracle Fusion Cloud Applications, and how we expect agents and cloud applications will work together going forward.
AI agents 101
AI agents are software applications created by combining large language models with other advanced technologies. They are autonomous and can interact with their environments, automate tasks, and collaborate with employees, customers, suppliers, partners, or other AI agents. AI agents’ reasoning capabilities differentiate them from the brittle, rules-based automation of the past—in contrast to traditional coding that specifies logic based on “if, then, else” statements, AI agents can make judgement calls, create action plans, and manage workflows, either independently or with supervision.
We expect the biggest gains in productivity to come from orchestrating multiple AI agents to work together. In these “agentic workflows,” a supervisory agent coordinates the work of various specialist agents, and collectively they can execute complex tasks. This kind of agent orchestration will likely redefine what it means to be a modern business application.
AI agents in Fusion Apps
AI agents can make apps significantly more useful and valuable, and they are fundamental to how we think about the future. Like Oracle AI capabilities generally, we are embedding a growing number of agents directly in Fusion Apps. They will make it possible to automate tasks that were previously manual or only partially automated, with human oversight if desired. One example is automating procure-to-pay processes by ingesting images of sales quotes and creating requisitions. Another is streamlining a recruiter’s work by generating job postings, composing messages to candidates, and summarizing candidate experiences.
We have already delivered multiple AI agents and are working on:
- Expanding our AI agent capabilities with workflows and orchestrators, which make it possible for groups of agents with specialized skills to work together to solve more complex tasks.
- Investing in industry-specific agents that can assist with workflows in verticals like healthcare, financial services, and government.
- Empowering customers to further extend and customize agents to meet their own unique requirements.
Conclusion
Like past technological shifts, such as the move from mainframes to client-server, AI agents are the next phase of evolution for cloud applications. And we’re embracing the change, actively developing and embedding AI agents across the Fusion Apps Suite. Oracle is also working to deliver industry-specific agents and an extensibility platform to help you build, customize, and orchestrate agents to meet unique needs. And we’re delivering them at no additional cost to you since they are included as part of your Fusion Apps subscription. For more, you can hear Steve Miranda, executive vice president of Fusion Applications development, discuss Oracle’s approach to AI agents in Fusion Apps in this recent interview.
