Oracle Streaming Becomes Kafka Compatible

Somnath Lahiri
Product Lead, Streaming & Messaging

Since its inception, the core tenet of Oracle’s cloud native offering has been to embrace open source. Earlier this year, we introduced the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Streaming service as a cloud native messaging platform for Oracle developers. Today, we’re announcing the general availability of Streaming service compatibility with Apache Kafka, the leading message bus platform for building event-driven applications and real-time big data infrastructure for analytics.

This offering combines the unique value propositions of both platforms:

  • Use the Kafka connector ecosystem with the Kafka API to provide streaming solutions without vendor lock-in.
  • Use the fully managed Streaming service, and its integration with Oracle Cloud access control and security features, to fulfill enterprise security needs.
  • Pay about 20-40% less than for on-premises Kafka implementations by using the pay-as-you-use pricing model for the Streaming service.

Customers who use the Kafka protocol can now migrate to the Streaming service by simply changing the configuration settings. No code refactoring is required.

Use Cases

Using Kafka connectors with the Streaming service opens up a range of use cases. For example:

  • Move data from Streaming to Autonomous Data Warehouse to perform advanced analytics and visualization.
  • Use Oracle GoldenGate to capture database change data and push that data to Streaming via the Oracle GoldenGate Kafka connector, and build event-driven applications on top of Streaming.
  • Move data from Streaming to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Object Storage via the HDFS/S3 Connector for long-term storage or for running Hadoop/Spark jobs.

Region Availability

Kafka compatibility is available across all Oracle Cloud Infrastructure commercial regions.
