Oracle Shatters Cloud Storage Limits: 32 TB Volumes, 1 PB per Instance with the Best Performance!

By: Max Verun | Principal Product Manager

We are excited to announce that the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Block Volume service now supports up to 32 TB volumes, doubled from the prior limit of 16 TB per volume.  With 32 attachments on a compute instance, you can now have a total of 1 petabyte of high performance block storage per instance, twice as much as before. All our storage uses best-in-class NVMe SSDs, and has data plane availability, control plane availability, and performance that are backed by the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure SLA.

Now is the time to bring your storage-hungry workloads, both Oracle and non-Oracle to our cloud platform. With this announcement Oracle Cloud Infrastructure will further strengthen its position as the best public cloud for storage intensive applications, as highlighted by the first Editor's Choice Award granted to a cloud provider by StorageReview. Compared to virtualized all-flash storage array solutions, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure block volumes have better peak performance and more usable IOPS at peak. Rest assured that the performance you expect remains the same with these new limits. We continue to offer predictable, consistent, and linearly scaling performance regardless of the volume size. For each block volume, you get 60 IOPS/GB and 480 KBPS/GB throughput, up to a maximum of 25,000 IOPS and 320 MB/S throughput per volume. Just provision the capacity that you need and the performance is there.

The 32 TB storage volumes are available to all Oracle Cloud Infrastructure customers according to their account's block storage capacity limits. These larger volumes continue to be billed at the same rate of $0.0425 per GB per month, and they support all of the same functionality as before, such as policy-based automated and scheduled backups and deep disk-to-disk clones in seconds. To compare pricing, for example the Dell EMC Unity 350F All-Flash Storage has a starting price of $33,685 for 4 TB storage, which is five times costlier than the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Block Volume service for 3 years amortized usage of the same starter 4TB storage capacity. Oracle Siebel, PeopleSoft, E-Business Suite environments, and other large enterprise databases can greatly benefit from this massive increase in high-performance storage capability and price advantage. There is no longer any reason or excuse to stay behind with on-premises storage solutions.
