Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) periodically releases new generations of Compute shapes. The latest shapes let you take advantage of newer hardware and a better price-performance ratio. When a shape is several years old, and newer generation shapes that are suited for the same purposes are available, the old shape transitions to become a previous generation shape.
Today, we’re announcing the transition of our Intel X7 (Standard, HPC2, and GPU) shapes to previous generation starting February 28, 2022. Previous generation shapes are still fully supported. You can keep using your existing X7 shapes. However, OCI can’t assure fulfillment of more capacity for certain high-demand regions where capacity is limited, because the underlying hardware has reached the sustaining phase of its life cycle.
What does SKU transition mean?
Because older generation X7 SKUs are no longer manufactured and OCI can’t purchase more hardware from its vendors after the noted date, we cannot guarantee fulfillment of extra capacity of X7-based shapes in certain high-demand regions.
Who and how does it impact?
This transition impacts all customers using these shapes. If you’re currently using the X7 SKU, OCI continues to support your usage in all regions in which X7 shapes are currently offered. However, we can’t support any further growth of X7 SKUs in any of the regions with limited capacity. New regions coming online after March 1, 2022 won’t have these shapes available in the region.
What’s our recommendation?
Before the transition date of X7 SKUs, we recommend using alternate platforms to grow your usage on OCI and encourage you to qualify new generation shapes as soon as possible. The following table lists alternate new generation shapes for X7 shapes. Alternate options don’t currently exist for the GPU VM shapes. We can update you when they’re available. GPU E3 capacity aren’t available in all regions.
