We’re announcing the general availability of OpenSearch 3.2 in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Search with OpenSearch, bringing a new wave of advanced AI/ML capabilities, performance enhancements, and extended functionality to your search and analytics workloads.

The 3.x series of OpenSearch bring in a powerful upgrade leveraging the advancements in Apache Lucene 10. With this new foundation, OpenSearch 3.x now delivers optimized vector-field indexing for faster ingestion and smaller index sizes, sparse indexing for improved CPU and storage efficiency, and advanced vector quantization to cut memory usage.

Use cases for OCI Search with OpenSearch

Intelligent Enterprise Search: The core of OpenSearch is a powerful search and analytics engine. Leverage OCI Search with OpenSearch’s ability to store and query high-dimensional vectors to find similarity based on meaning and context among structured and unstructured content.  Examples include document search, music/video discovery, identifying duplicate customer profiles for customer data unification.

Generative AI Applications – Retrieval-Augmented Generation and Conversational Search: Acts as a long-term memory store to ground LLM responses with proprietary, up-to-date, and domain-specific facts, reducing the likelihood of hallucinations. Integration with OCI GenAI Services makes the development of AI applications in OCI easier.

Autonomous agent workflows via MCP and Inbuilt Tools: Expose OpenSearch functionalities via the Model Context Protocol (MCP), allowing agents to execute multi-step, automated actions on cluster data. Example includes a data analyst agent which compares the growth across different sales regions.

AI-Powered Observability: Easily load data with Data Prepper Pipelines and interact with it to gain insights in natural language.  The integration of AI agents can help you proactively identify and resolve production issues with greater speed.

New Features in OpenSearch 3.2

AI/ML & Search New Capabilities

  • Native MCP server and MCP client support: Availability of a new built-in MCP server which allows you to expose OpenSearch tools over a streaming Server-Sent Events (SSE) interface. This allows agents to access data real-time, in a safe manner.
  • New Agentic AI Features: Addition of a Plan-Execute-Reflect Agent, which breaks down complex tasks into simple steps (plan), carries out each step (execute), and improves its approach based on the outcomes of each step (reflect).
  • OpenSearch Flow Template and Dashboards: Flow templates allow easy configuration of agents by leveraging pre-made templates.
  • Semantic Search Optimization: Fine-tune embedding field parameters, customize text chunking, and configure embedding generation for semantic search scenarios

Performance & Observability

  • Piped Processing Language (PPL) Improvements: Performance and query flexibility improvements with a new Calcite-row-expression-based script engine, enabling aggregation function pushdown, sort-merge-join pushdown, and more.
  • Improved Approximation Framework: Expanded query capabilities to support all numeric field types, accelerating range and aggregation queries
